The big follow-up to Rockstar Games’ second most popular title did not disappoint. Red Dead Redemption 2 expanded on its predecessor and somehow made the Wild Wild West look beautiful.
And the in-game changes were not the only improvement.
The sequel reeled in a bigger pool of players because it got a wider release across various platforms. Where the original was only available on Xbox and PlayStations, RDR2 got a release on Xbox, PlayStation, Microsoft Windows, and Google Stadia.
Yes, good ol’ Google Stadia got a special Red Dead Redemption 2 release.
But is Red Dead Redemption 2 cross-platform? That’s what you want to know, isn’t it? Will any of these consoles allow you to crossplay RDR2 with your friends?
Let’s find out.
Is Red Dead Redemption 2 Cross-Platform?
Red Dead Redemption 2 first came out in October 2018. At that time, it was a PS4 and Xbox One exclusive. Then in November 2019, Rockstar released the game for Google Stadia (a cloud gaming service) and Microsoft Windows.
Moreover, RDR2 also supports the new-gen consoles of both Microsoft and Sony. So, Xbox Series S/X and PS5 owners can also explore the America West through backward compatibility.
But, Red Dead Redemption 2 does not support crossplay across any of these platforms.
Xbox users can only play with Xbox users- no Game Pass workaround to team up with PC gamers.
The same goes for PlayStation and Google Stadia users.
But at least we have cross-generation support, right?
What Is Cross Generation?
Cross generation is when players of the same console family can crossplay games across different generations.
Xbox One is old-gen, and Xbox Series S/X is new-gen hardware. RDR2 is available on both these generations. So – thanks to cross-generation support – Red Dead Redemption 2 is cross-platform between Xbox One and Xbox Series S/X.
Similarly, PS4 and PS5 users can crossplay RDR2 without any glitches.
For PC users, the Epic and Steam version of RDR2 will also allow crossplay. And as for Google Stadia users, there’s no next-gen to worry about.
Is Red Dead Redemption 2 Cross Progression?
Cross progression allows you to transfer all your progress between platforms easily. So, when you decide to change platforms or upgrade your gaming console, you won’t have to start over.
Sadly, Red Dead Redemption 2 does not have cross-progression.
It’s a handy feature, especially for games that have been milking the same title for years – looking at you, GTA V.
At least Rockstar patched cross progression in GTA V. But, for RDR2, it looks more and more unlikely.
And that should answer all your questions about Red Dead Redemption 2 cross-platform.
Red Dead Redemption 3 is still at least 3 years from release. And Red Dead Online is pretty much dead. So, we’ll have to make do with what we have.
