Bees aren’t just adorable; they also produce tons of honey. If you’re interested in farming honey, the first step to starting a bee farm is gathering and breeding bees.
We’ve got all the information you need about how to breed bees in Minecraft, from where to find bees to how to gather and breed them.
How to Breed Bees in Minecraft
Bees are neutral mobs that are untameable, so don’t expect a pet bee to act in the same way a dog or cat would.
As with most other mobs, bees are bred by luring them with their favorite food (flowers), gathering at least two individuals into the same area, and feeding them their food.
However, the moment you unequip or drop the food, they will lose interest and begin wandering away.
Optional Step: Prepare a Home for Your Bees
Since bees are untameable, they’ll fly away the moment you’re done breeding them. If you want them to stay within the same general area, you’ll need to provide your bees with a place to stay. The best time to do this is before you start gathering and breeding the bees.
Pick a spot for your bees’ new home, then craft a Bee Hive using the crafting table
Recipe: 3 wood planks in the top row, 3 honeycombs in the middle row, and 3 wood planks in the bottom row.

Step 1. Find Bees
You can usually find bees hanging around bee nests. Occasionally, you’ll find them collecting pollen from flowers.
Birch and oak trees have a chance to spawn with a bee nest. A bee nest spawns with three bees inside of it. The odds of birch or oak tree spawning a bee nest depends on the biome:
Biome | Odds of Spawning Oak/Birch Tree Spawning Bee Nest
Java Edition | Bedrock Edition
Old-growth birch forest | 0.2% | 0.035% |
Forest | ||
Birch forest | ||
Meadow | 100% | |
Plains | 5% | |
Sunflower Plains | ||
Flower Forest | 2% | 3% |
Once you’ve found a bee nest, you can move on to the next step.
Step 2. Lure At Least Two Bees
Now that you’ve found some bees, it’s time to lure them into one spot. Bees are naturally attracted to flowers, so all you have to do is equip some flowers and walk up to the bees.
Any flower type works here; bees love them all.
Bees are attracted to all types of flowers. But take care not to let the bees get too close. They could sting you!
Step 3. Breed the Bees
Once you have two or more bees in one spot (preferably near one of your beehives), all you have to do is give the flower to your bees.
Keep on giving them flowers until they begin to produce hearts — the Minecraft signifier that these animals are breeding. Shortly, a baby bee will spawn nearby.
Now that you know how to breed bees in Minecraft, you can make your honey farm dream a reality! Congratulations and best wishes on your endeavors.
