What You Need to Make Obsidian
- 1x Bucket (to fill with water)
- 1x Source of Lava
- 1x Diamond pickaxe or Netherite Pickaxe (to obtain the Obsidian)
How to make Obsidian in Minecraft
Step 1. Make a bucket (requires 3 iron ingots total) or find one in your storage room.
Step 2. Find a water source and fill your bucket up by looking at the source block and right-clicking whilst the bucket is in your hand.
Step 3. Locate a natural source of lava
You can find lava almost anywhere in the world. That can be underground whilst you’re mining or on the surface while you’re exploring your world.
Step 4. Pour the water over the lava by right-clicking when the water bucket is in your hand
Note: You need to pour water on a lava SOURCE block or it will just turn to cobblestone instead of Obsidian.
Step 5. Once the water has spread and you can see the obsidian blocks on the surface (they are the blackish ones) pick up your water by clicking the water source block with the empty bucket in hand.
Step 6. Mine the obsidian with a Diamond or Netherite pickaxe.
Step 7. Carefully pick up the obsidian by walking near it
Other ways to get Obsidian In Minecraft
Beyond making Obsidian using the method above, there are a few other ways you can get Obsidian blocks in your survival world.
1. Exploring certain structures
Obsidian can be obtained as loot from chests within certain types of structures; Bastion Remnant, Nether Fortress, Ruined Portal, and Villages.
2. Bastion Remnant
Bastion remnants are large, castle-like structures that can naturally spawn in the Nether, in all biomes except the basalt deltas.
There is a 24% chance that the chest in the bastion will contain between 4-6 blocks of obsidian.
3. Nether Fortress
A nether fortress is a large complex of bridges, corridors, and towers that can only be found in the Nether.
There is an 8% chance that the chest in the Nether Fortress contains 2-4 blocks of obsidian, but there are multiple chests in each fortress.
4. Ruined Portal
Ruined Portals can generate absolutely anywhere in a Minecraft world. That means they can be found in any biome and even underwater or underground.
There is a 45% chance that the Ruined Portal chest will contain 1-2 blocks of obsidian.
If there is none in the Ruined Portal chest, you can, of course, take the spare obsidian blocks the structure naturally spawns with.
5. The Village Blacksmith
The blacksmith’s chest, if you’re lucky enough, will contain obsidian and other useful items. Not all Villages have naturally spawning blacksmiths, so you might have to find multiple villages to come across one.
There is about a 25% chance that the blacksmith’s chest will contain 3-7 blocks of obsidian.
So there it is! Step-by-step guide on how to make Obsidian in Minecraft and also 4 ways you can obtain Obsidian for free. Good luck!
