Do you know how old is Among Us? For most people, Among Us was a 2020 release that took the whole world by storm during the pandemic.
However, that’s not true. Even though Among Us only got popular in 2020, it’s been around since 2018.
You might find it hard to believe, but initially, Among Us only had 1 map and an average of 50 concurrent players. Now, in March 2022, Innersloth hosts 455,544,547 active users.
So, we aren’t completely sold on the Among Us dead notion just yet. But there’s more to video game deaths than just stats and numbers.
Aspects like players’ interest, game updates, UI changes, gameplay improvements – and more recently – crossplay support have come to decide whether a game lives on or is buried 6 feet under the ground after a 6 months peak.
So, we’ll try and answer the ‘is Among Us dead’ question by focusing on these ingredients.
Is Among Us Dead?
No, we don’t believe that Among Us is dead just yet.
Although it has lost an incredible number of monthly active players, the devs are playing their part in keeping Among Us alive.
One of the biggest reasons people think Among Us is dead is because it’s no longer the favorite game for Youtubers and Twitch streamers- the very same people that brought all the exposure to Among Us.
Rollback a year, and you’ll see almost every YouTuber, click-baiting viewers, using Among Us. YouTubers like Corpse Husband and Disguised Toast gained a massive audience from Among Us and then totally dumped the game.
But just because YouTubers and streamers have turned away, doesn’t necessarily mean that Among Us is dead.
Is Among Us Dying?
En route maybe.
You see, Among Us is a very basic game whose biggest attraction is getting to play a murder mystery along with your friends.
It doesn’t have the thrill, blood, and gore of the COD franchise, nor does it have the fun collaboration like Fortnite, and let’s just say Among Us graphics aren’t up to par.
So, what was it that people liked so much about Among Us? It was the premise. Crewmates do menial tasks while a maniac tries to kill everyone.
But, at one point the menial tasks were going to start seeming outdated and boring. And that is what’s happening right now.
New maps and new roles are all fun additions, but there have been no changes in the tasks since the inception of the game.
Whether you play the easiest Among Us map or the toughest, the tasks are all the same- with 1 or 2 exceptions. Fix some wires, put in some fuels, and take care of the oxygen supply.
And that’s where developers have missed the trick.
Instead of adding unnecessary features like a quick chat and Cosmicubes, new tasks are needed to attract new players and bring back the veterans too.
Is Among Us Still Popular?
The so-rumored dead Among Us is still quite popular all over the world.
If you don’t believe the active player counter, join any Among Us discord server and you’ll see how many people are still invested in Among Us.
These Discord servers host plenty of lobbies for players from all over the world and moderate voice chat and non-voice chat gameplays.
The reason people are questioning the popularity is the same as why people think of Among Us as dead, little content creation by YouTubers, and fewer streams by Twitch gamers.
Although the inclusion of The Airship brought a slight spike in the popularity charts when everyone wanted to try out the new map, it faded away quickly.
With a huge Among Us update lined up that has new roles, UI changes, and a brand new addition to the Among Us maps, the devs are hoping to return Among Us to its formal glory. But, seeing as there’s no mention of any new tasks, it seems difficult.
One of our team members had an interesting take on this debate. He believed that because all of us overplayed it, we killed the essence ourselves. And it’s true to some extent.
Once it became popular, everyone was playing Among Us and then some more Among Us.
Every social media platform was filled with Among Us content, from anime to fan arts- and crazy Among Us mods were coming out every day.
Sadly, Innersloth missed their chances of taking Among Us to new heights. We hope the 2022 roadmap brings about the right changes though.
