This Game Copied Among Us, Quickly Became Viral

With the assistance of a famous Korean gamer, Goose Goose Duck climbed to the top of Steam’s list of most-played games this month.

What is Goose Goose Duck and why is it so popular on Steam?

One of the most prominent cases of delayed success in the videogame industry is the social deception game Among Us, which became a megahit during the 2020 lockdowns despite releasing two years earlier in 2018. Goose Goose Duck is a free-to-play game that, oddly enough, has recreated not only the format of Among Us but also its delayed popularity.

Goose Goose Duck spent a year in obscurity, but began to gain traction on Steam around the middle of the month of November. Weirder still, Goose Goose Duck and Among Us gained popular for identical reasons. The popularity of Among Us in 2020 was mostly attributable to Korean streamers. The reasons behind Goose Goose Duck’s meteoric rise from a few thousand players at the beginning of November to over 150,000 gamers in early December are not difficult to ascertain. Kim Tae-hyung, a member of the Korean boy band BTS, live-streamed it on November 14.

How I played the game (I’m just too bad at this)

Although Goose Goose Duck has its own twists to the Among Us concept (such as its variety of special roles), the show’s overall design and format are so similar to the viral hit that I believe it’s safe to call it a rip-off. 

I joined in and played one round. As expected, there were kids who spoke too loudly into hot mics and kids who lied very poorly. I wasn’t very good at playing. Early on, I was accused of being a saboteur because I didn’t do things in a logical and efficient order. However, I didn’t know what I was doing, so I didn’t know what order to do things in.

As soon as the game started, I couldn’t remember if I was on the Geese or the Ducks, and I kept getting confused about which side I was on. My special role as the Mimic, whose description says, “The Ducks see you as one of them,” didn’t help solve this problem.

I’m pretty sure I was a good guy, but I was finally voted to death for reasons that only the server’s loudest player could understand. The first time I was accused, the vote was tied, so I didn’t die. Even if I were a good person, they were probably right to get me out of the way so the important people could do what they needed.
