Inkay and Malamar are two fan favorites from the X & Y Pokemon games. Inkay had a really unique process of evolution in the original game but did it translate to GO?
In this guide, I’m going to cover how to evolve Inkay in Pokemon GO, and further down I’ll go over if you can actually get a shiny Inkay/Malamar in GO.
How to Evolve Inkay in Pokemon GO
Nowadays, Niantic has actually made it extremely easy to evolve Inkay. Simply collect 50 Inkay candies and press the Evolve button.
Now, this method may only work if you have an iPhone without a gyroscope inside of it (Yes, you read that right). If your phone does have a gyroscope, then you have to do something a little special.
How to Evolve Inkay in Pokemon GO on Android (The Upside Down Method)
When you’re running GO on a phone with a gyroscope, you need to flip your phone upside down in order to evolve your Inkay into a Malamar.
This mimics the original X and Y games, where players had to literally turn their console upside down in order to evolve their Inkay.
Fun Fact: Originally, this was the only way to evolve Inkay in GO. So if you didn’t have a gyroscope, there was no way to evolve your Pokemon!
How to check for Gyroscope on your Phone
If you (like me) are not sure whether your phone has a gyroscope or not, here’s an easy way to find out:
- Open up Youtube on your phone
- Search for “360 Video” and choose one
Now, if you can move your phone around and it looks around in the video, congrats! You have a Gyroscope.
How to Catch Inkay in Pokemon GO
Whether your phone has a gyroscope or not, you’re going to need to collect some candy to evolve your Inkay.
Unlike Evolving Inkay, there’s nothing special you can do to catch it. However, there are a few places to find Inkay in Pokemon GO:
- In the Wild
- In One Star Raids
- Through Field Research
There’s no trick for finding Inkays, you just have to keep your ear to the ground and camp in the areas where they spawn.
When will we get Shiny Inkay in Pokemon GO
At the moment, there is no way to get a Shiny Inkay or a Shiny Malamar in Pokemon GO. This is typical with newly released Pokemon, and eventually, they will be added to the game (most likely).
