Thoma in Genshin Impact is a ‘fixer’ who can deal with any and every problem that comes his way. His playstyle is similar too, making him a great addition to any team.
If you’ve just summoned Thoma and are now looking for the best ways to play him, you’re in luck. Today, we’ll be going over everything there is to know about Thoma from his move-set, playstyle, and builds to make him as powerful as can be.
We’ll first start by going over his Talent sheet and figuring out his preferred playstyle.
Talents & Playstyle
Thoma is a utility character that can make quick plays with his Elemental Skill & Burst, making him suited to a Sub-DPS or Support role. He has a Pyro affinity and is a Polearm weapon user.
In our Genshin Impact tier list, he’s a B-Tier character for his Support role. While he can function as a Sub-DPS, he’s better as a Support character as there are better characters for Sub-DPS in Genshin Impact.
Thoma has a great Talent sheet that can support his team on and off the field, especially by Shielding the party and dealing Pyro damage.
Normal & Charged Attack – Swiftshatter Spear
Thoma’s Normal Attack can execute a 4-combo attack, with the last hit being a fancy twist that launches enemies backward.
Holding his Charged Attack consumes stamina and sends him flying forward, dealing damage to enemies in his path.
His Normal & Charged attacks are pretty limited in the sense they’re not very good damage dealers.
Elemental Skill – Blazing Blessing
Thoma’s Elemental Skill, Blazing Blessing, makes him leap into the air with a Pyro kick, dealing AoE Pyro damage.
Activating the skill also imbues attacks with Pyro DMG and summons a Pyro shield, Blazing Barrier.
This shield scales off Thoma’s Max HP and has a unique characteristic where DMG absorption stacks on a new Blazing Barrier shield if the previous Blazing Barrier has any remaining DMG Absorption.
The duration of the shield will also be refreshed and absorbs Pyro by 250%.
Elemental Burst – Crimson Ooyoroi
Crimson Ooyoroi triggers a spin attack with his polearm that deals AoE Pyro damage to surrounding enemies and summons Scorching Ooyoroi.
While Scorching Ooyoroi is active, the character in the field can trigger Fiery Collapse every 1 second. Fiery Collapse is activated by Normal Attacks and inflicts AoE Pyro damage.
Scorching Ooyoroi also summons the Blazing Barrier shield which has the same properties as the Elemental Skill, Blazing Blessing.
Overall, Thoma’s Talent sheet has a lot of potentials to shield the party from damage, especially Pyro damage. He can continuously stack shields from his Elemental Skill and Burst to ensure the party is always protected.
But
His Elemental Skill has a long cooldown and his Elemental Burst needs a lot of energy, which makes it hard to synergize shield summons.
But play him right and you’ll be able to handle a lot of damage for your party, making him a great Support character.
Now, let’s take a look at his weapon and artifact build to maximize his potential.
Thoma Genshin Impact Build
Thoma’s most ideal playstyle would be in the Support role as his shields can block a lot of damage for the team. He can also Sub-DPS, but it’s harder to build and won’t get you as much return as playing the Support role will.
His main build will revolve around increasing HP% and Energy Recharge. For sub-stats, you can opt to increase Energy Recharge or HP% but you should focus on increasing Max HP for stronger shields.
Primary Weapon Choice – Staff of Homa
The Staff of Homa is an excellent weapon for a lot of characters in Genshin Impact, including Thoma. The weapon increases Max HP by 20% as a base which is great for Thoma’s shield scaling.
Furthermore, the Staff of Homa gives an Attack bonus scaled off 0.8% of Thoma’s Max HP. Additionally, once HP is lower than 50%, the Attack bonus increases by 1% of Max HP on top of the 0.8% scaling.
Since Thoma’s Support build focuses on increasing Max HP, the Staff of Homa can take advantage of this by increasing his Attack as well.
Thoma is already an underwhelming damage dealer, but these slight increases should help him be a viable DPS while supporting the party with shields.
If you’re missing the Staff of Homa though, here are some great alternatives.
Substitute Weapons
- Skyward Spine – Crit Rate +8% & ATK SPD +12%. Normal/Charged ATKs have 50% chance to deal 40% ATK in small AoE DMG.
- The Catch – Elemental Burst DMG +16% / Burst Crit Rate +6%
- Favnoious Lance – Crits have a 60% chance to create Elemental Particles. Regens 6 Energy & occurs once every 12s.
Artifact Build
Thoma’s Artifact build should focus on increasing HP% and Energy Recharge. The ideal build would be a dual 2-piece set bonus increasing both these core stats. Sub-stats should increase HP%, Energy Recharge, or Elemental Burst DMG.
- Emblem of Severed Fate – +20% Energy Recharge
- Tenacity of the Millelith – +20% HP
- Noblesse Oblige – +20% Elemental Burst DMG
If possible, aim for a 2-piece Emblem of Severed Fate and 2-piece Tenacity of the Millelith to increase both Energy Recharge and Max HP. This will give the best return to Thoma’s talents and build.
