The Fairy type is one of the newest types of Pokemon in the series and has quickly become a fan favorite thanks to Pokemon like Sylveon.
Because the type is so new, many players do not know of any Fairy-type weakness in Pokemon Sword and Shield and are not prepared for Scarlet and Violet releasing in late 2022. Hence, the reason for this guide.
Fairy Type Weakness Chart
If you want to skip the guide, and just get the stats, I’ve included a chart at the bottom.
Fairy Type Weakness (Defense)
When a Pokemon has a type weakness on offense, they take double damage from moves. So you want to avoid using your Fairy types against Pokemon with moves of the following type:
- Poison
- Steel
Fairy Type Weakness (Offense)
By an offensive weakness, I mean that Fairy type moves will do less damage against Pokemon with the following typing:
- Poison
- Fire
- Steel
As you can see, Poison and Steel are two major counters of Fairy-type Pokemon. Fortunately, there is a trick to getting around this.
Poison type Pokemon are weak against Psychic moves, which Fairy types can typically learn many of. So, if you’re bringing a Fairy-type Pokemon, teach them a nice, strong Psychic move.
Fairy Type Strength (Defense)
Fairy type Pokemon have their own set of types they are strong against, defensively. This means that Fairy type Pokemon will take half damage from the following types:
- Bug
- Dark
- Fighting
- Dragon (Immune)
Fairy Type Strength (Offense)
Fairy types also do extra damage to certain types of Pokemon. There really is no rule of thumb to help out here. If Fairy is strong against the type defensively, it is also strong against it offensively.
Fairy type Pokemon do double damage to the following types:
- Dark
- Dragon
- Fighting
Dragon Type Immunity
Fairy-type Pokemon are completely immune to Dragon type attacks. This means your Fairy Pokemon will take absolutely no damage.
On top of this, Fairy-type moves do double damage to Dragon-type Pokemon, making the Fairy type the number one counter of Dragon Pokemon.
Fairy Type VS Chart
Type | Attacking | Defending |
Dark | 2x | 0.5x |
Dragon | 2x | 0x |
Fighting | 2x | 0.5x |
Fire | 0.5x | 1x |
Poison | 0.5x | 2x |
Steel | 0.5x | 2x |
Bug | 1x | 0.5x |
Always remember that type-weaknesses stack. So if you use a Pokemon like Tapu Bulu, which is a Fairy and Grass type Pokemon, then it will take 4x damage from Poison Pokemon.
