Subnautica is considered one of the best survival games with an open-world environment that takes a different spin on the genre.
While others out there focus on land-based combat, survival, and exploration, Subnautica is one of a few that focuses on the deep unknown – the ocean.
And then came along Subnautica: Below Zero back in 2021 as a sequel to the original release. The game only exemplifies what the original showed us with even more colossal underwater creatures to marvel at, mysteries to find, and places to explore.
We’ll be going over the Subnautica: Below Zero Map and showcasing some of the important things you’ll need to survive.
Plus some easy places to get resources like Lithium, Nickel, Magnetite, Lead, etc., and even the Leviathan Map in Subnautica: Below Zero for those who want to find these gargantuan creatures.
But we’ll include that towards the end so if you want to go in blind, you should avoid that portion for now.
Let’s get straight into it!
Subnautica: Below Zero Map Guide
Before we get into the guide for the Subnautica: Below Zero map, a quick shoutout to Reddit user u/The_Mighty_Tspoon and their team for their Subnautica: Below Zero Interactive Map.
We’ll be using this as a reference to show you where you’ll need to go to find resources, Biomes & what they offer, creatures, and more.
Do note that some items on the interactive map aren’t shown exactly and will only show the region (Biome) they’re found in.
For example, Lithium is a raw material found in most Biomes and is used frequently for late-game blueprints.
You’ll be able to find them on the seabeds in underwater areas like the Purple Vents Biome but you can also mine them from specific marked Ore Veins in the Arctic Spires.
So if it’s available, we’ll mention it, but if not, you’ll have to go exploring the specified underwater Biomes to find the things you need. But we’ll at least point you in the right direction.
Now that’s out of the way, we’ll start things off by showing you where to find some important resources for your bevy of tools, blueprints, and vehicles!
Subnautica: Below Zero Map Resource Locations
Raw Materials in Subnautica: Below Zero are an important resource for progression and crafting in the game among other uses.
You’re going to need to farm these materials for new blueprints you come across so it’s a good idea to stock up as you go.
These kinds of games thrive when you figure out a routine and where to find certain items/materials.
In Subnautica: Below Zero, there are two types of Raw Materials: Minerals/Ores and Biological.
They have a variety of uses so it’s a good idea to keep an eye on where materials are found and regularly top up to make sure you always have a stack of materials to use.
The first few resources we’ll highlight are locations of important Minerals and Ores on the Subnautica Map.
You’ll need to pay attention to two things on the map, that being the markers and the white highlighted portion of the map. This indicates the thing you’re looking for is found in those Biomes but not exactly where to find them.
Where to find Lithium in Subnautica: Below Zero
Lithium is a precious resource especially so for better, late-game blueprints and crafting, and should be farmed when found.
They’re not particularly rare, but it might take a while to find them and will require some work.
On the land areas of the Subnautica map, in this case, the Arctic Spire, you’ll find a few places to obtain Lithium from Ore Veins as well as tunnels.
The three tunnels you can find Lithium (as well as Copper & Silver) are the Spires Ore Tunnel, Northwest Ore Tunnel, and another Spires Ore Tunnel.
Otherwise, I’d recommend combing through the Purple Vents Subnautica: Below Zero Biomes as they’re plentiful in this area. But be warned, you’ll find some enemies in the area like the Cryptosuchus which will attack you and your vehicle.
Once there, go down to the seabed and you’ll find purple vents bubbling and can loot them for a variety of resources including Lithium. Lithium is also found in these Biomes –
- Arctic Spires
- Crystal Caves
- Main Crystal Caves
- Purple Vents
- Deep Purple Vents
- East Arctic
- Deep Twisty Bridges
- Thermal Spires
- Tree Spires
- Tree Spires Fissure
Where to find Nickel in Subnautica: Below Zero
Nickel is another important material for late-game progress and crafting and upgrading suits, jump jets, and vehicles.
You’ll also need Nickel to craft your Seatruck Depth Upgrade which allows an impressive 1000m depth range. That’s just one of the essential upgrades to progress through the game so keep a lookout.
So yes, it’s going to be a valuable resource and should be picked up when found because you never know when you’re going to need an extra ore or two.
You can also get Nickel from a Sea Monkey. This isn’t a super reliable way to get them, but you could do it if you wanted. You’ll find Nickel in a few places including these Biomes:
- Lilypad Islands
- Deep Lilypads Cave
- Crystal Caves
- Fabricator Caverns
Where to find Magnetite in Subnautica: Below Zero
Magnetite is one of those resources you’ll want to have plenty of and there are many places you can find them.
Most notably, on the Glacial Basin, multiple Ore Veins contain Magnetite and can also be found in the Spy Pengling Access Points, a Hidden Stash, and the Alterra Cache Cave in the Biome.
You’re going to need Magnetite for crafting things using the Habitat Builder & Fabricator or as an energy source, upgrading, and more.
Safe to say you’ll need quite a few Magnetite ores as you progress through the Subnautica Below Zero Map.
You can also find Magnetite on the Seabed in these Biomes –
- Crystal Caves
- Main Crystal Caves
- Crystal Caves Fissure
- East Arctic
- Deep Lilypads Cave
- Glacial Basin
- West Arctic
- Glacial Connection
Where to find Lead in Subnautica: Below Zero
If you were a big believer in Nuclear energy, then Lead is going to be an important material for you.
Lead is pretty useful and is necessary for important upgrades for both the Prawn Suit and Seatruck by crafting Enameled Glass.
Lead is also one of the main components in creating the Reactor Rod and Nuclear Reactor which are both essential in end-game for massive energy output to your bases.
You can also find Lead and Titanium in Galena Outcrops and from Sea Monkeys.
There are also plenty of upgrades/blueprints requiring Lead and they’re integral to progress through the game. So, it’s a good idea to figure out where to easily attain the raw material.
Lead can be found in these Biomes –
- Twisty Bridge
- Thermal Spires
- Lilypad Islands
- East Arctic
- Glacial Connection
- Crystal Caves
Subnautica: Below Zero Biomes Highlights
There’s so much to do, find, and explore in the Subnautica Below Zero Map, you might miss out on a few things.
If you’re able to access these Biomes on this list, you should definitely go ahead and find these things to make life on Planet 4546B easier.
The collectibles/locations we’re mentioning below aren’t that hard to access, they have pretty great rewards and will most times get you something unique or useful.
It might even reward you with valuable tools and Fragments to craft important gear.
Subnautica Wrecks Map
Wrecks in Subnautica are few and far between and in fact, there’s technically only one wreck on the whole map.
These remnants are those of Mercury II, a Sol Trans-gov spaceship that broke off into three different pieces across the Purple Vents and Lilypad Islands.
On the map though, there are four distinct marked Wreck sites with one of them being just the Debris of the crash found in the center of the Purple Vents. The other three Wrecks are as follows –
- Mercury II Stem (Depth ~150)
- Mercury II Thruster (Depth ~145)
- Mercury II Bow (Depth ~250)
There’s a bunch of great stuff to find including Fragments, materials, and decorative pieces for your base.
But keep in mind to access most of the good stuff is locked and needs a Laser Cutter to access rooms/supply containers.
Otherwise, the rewards are well worth the trip so once you’re able to reach at least ~250m Depth, we recommend going on a mission to attain all this free loot.
Subnautica Alterra Containers Map
Alterra Containers, also known as Supply Crates are plentiful around the Above Land Biomes across the Subnautica Map.
They have a select pool of loot that can be found and some crates feature x2 items, while some have x5 items.
You can find plenty of stuff in these crates including Batteries, Wiring Kits, Power Cells, Reactor Rods, Fiber Mesh, First Aid Kits, and more.
If you’re skulking around the area, we’d recommend looking for these chests for some quick and easy loot.
Subnautica Jukebox Disks Map
While Jukebox Disks aren’t integral to the gameplay, if you’re like me, and you like designing your base pimping it out with the best stuff, you might enjoy finding them.
Especially so if you’re a fan of turning on the Jukebox and speakers around your base for some tunes.
There are just 8 of these Jukebox Disks around the Subnautica map so they’re not too cumbersome to find.
You’ll also find some of these Disks within the Wrecks we’ve mentioned above so keep a lookout for them if you are keen on some new tracks.
Subnautica: Below Zero Leviathan Map
There are only a few things more majestic and awe-inspiring to find in Subnautica than Leviathans. These creatures are ginormous, well-designed creatures and a pain.
Well, some of them, like the above Ice Worm are best avoided since they are lethal and will ambush you without warning.
You can use the markers below (Orange Skull Icons) as a way to avoid these areas, or if you’re feeling adventurous, to discover the megalithic creatures.
Another thing to keep in mind is that Leviathan creatures will not respawn if killed. Do with that what you will, it’s your choice if you’re up for a fight or if you’d rather leave them to their territories. Either way, here’s where you can find them.
And that leads us to the end of the article, and hopefully, there’s something for everyone here. You never know when you’ll need something and it can be frustrating trying to look for something specific to no avail.
I’d recommend using whatever resources are available for the game. For further immersion survival fun, check out the best games like Subnautica you plan right now!
