In Minecraft, there are a few pets you can have, but none of them beat having a Dog by your side. It makes for a great companion that will also protect you in combat.
Dogs are, to all intents and purposes, tamed Wolves which can be found in the wild and tamed with a couple of bones, if you’re lucky enough.
Once tamed, you can also make them follow you around wherever you go or you can leave them protecting your base by getting them to sit.
They even teleport to you when you move away so you can always keep them by your side. In this guide, we’ll show you how to tame a dog in Minecraft.
What You Need to Tame a Dog in Minecraft

How to Tame a Dog in Minecraft
Step 1. Get your supplies
Bones can be found in Dungeons, Desert Temple, Jungle Temple, and Woodland Mansion chests. And are also dropped from defeated skeletons.
Step 2. Find a Dog to tame.
They’re not difficult to locate since they can be found in forests, taigas, groves, and snowy taigas. They will spawn in packs of 4 and there is a 10% chance there will be pups amongst them.
Step 3. Use bones to tame the dog
Once you’ve found a dog you want to tame, hold the bones in your hand and right-click the dog – do this until you see hearts flowing above its head.
You will also know you’ve done it correctly as it immediately goes into sitting mode and will have a red collar around its neck.
Congratulations, that’s how to tame a dog in Minecraft!
