There are so many things to do and make in Minecraft that it’s easy to forget that your weapons and gear can break. And they always break at the worst time, too — spelunking through a creeper-filled cavern or surrounded by an arm of piglins.

You can press F3 and H at the same time to see how much durability your item has.

In Java Edition, pressing this button combination will display the item bar, which shows you the item’s maximum and remaining durability.

In Bedrock Edition, you don’t get the convenience of seeing exactly how many uses are left in your item. Instead, mousing over an item will show you a colored bar, which gives you a general idea of the condition of your item.

Green means it’s in good condition, yellow means it’s a bit worn down, and red means it’s going to be destroyed soon.

What Exactly is Durability?

In Minecraft, a durability is a number that tells you how many times you can use a weapon, armor, or tool before it breaks. With every use, the durability is reduced by one point.

For weapons, that means every time you swing it, and for armor, durability goes down whenever you take damage.

An item’s maximum durability is determined by the type of item and the materials it’s made of; items made from harder materials generally have higher durability.

There are many items in Minecraft that are expensive or difficult to make. Maybe their materials are rare or they take a long time to collect.

It can be heartbreaking when your enchanted diamond sword falls apart in the middle of a trip to the Nether, especially since you’ve spent so much time and resources crafting it.

Fortunately, you can repair most items in the game, usually at a fraction of the cost of crafting from scratch. But once an item’s durability falls to zero, there’s no fixing it.

Items dropped by mobs will have a random durability number, so don’t forget to check before equipping that trident! However, if a mob picks up an item, it can use it as many times as it wants without reducing durability.
