How to Make a Boat in Minecraft

Boat is an entity in Minecraft that can be used to fast travel either underwater or on land, as long as you have the correct setup.

Using the boat, you can transport yourself as well as other mobs in the game.

What You Need to Craft Boat

To craft a Boat, you need some Overworld Planks. This means you can only use Oak, Spruce, Birch, Jungle, Dark Oak, Acacia, and the new wood type, Mangrove Planks.

5x Overworld Planks
1x Crafting Table
1x Wooden Shovel (Bedrock and Education edition only)

How to Make a Boat in Minecraft

Step 1: Collect 5x Overworld Planks

Overworld Planks are a common item in Minecraft that can be easily crafted by either placing 1x Log/Wood/Stripped Log/Stripped Wood in the crafting grid. Each recipe will yield 4x Planks.

Remember that you can only use Overworld Planks, so look for any trees in the Overworld, not in the Nether dimension. The most common wood type is Oak, which you can find literally anywhere.

You can also find Overworld Planks generated naturally in most structures in Minecraft like Mineshafts, Villages, Strongholds, Woodland Mansions, Shipwrecks, Ruins, Swamp Huts, and Pillager Outposts.

Bonus chest also has a super high chance to contain 1-12x Oak Planks. Just make sure to enable this option when creating a new world.

Step 2: Collect 1x Crafting Table

In order to craft 1x Crafting Table, you will need another 4x Planks. Just chop an extra Log and you should be good! Then put 4x Planks in a 2×2 shape in the crafting grid to craft 1x Crafting Table.

Put the Crafting Table in your hot bar and then right-click to place it down in the world. Now you’re ready to go!

Step 3: Collect 1x Wooden Shovel

You need at least 2 Sticks. If you already have some leftover Planks, press E to open your inventory and place 2x Planks in one column to craft 4x Sticks.

Then use your Crafting Table by right–click on it, placing 2x Sticks in the same column and 1x Planks on top of them to craft 1x Wooden Shovel.

Step 4: Finish off Crafting a Boat

When you have enough Planks, right-click the Crafting Table to open the crafting GUI, and place the Overworld Planks in the letter U shape to craft 1x Boat.

If you’re playing Bedrock or Education edition, the recipe for Boat is slightly different. You will need to place an extra 1x Wooden Shovel in the middle slot to craft 1x Boat.

The color and appearance of the Boat will completely depend on the Planks type you use. So make sure to find your favorite color before making one. And that’s it, now you can travel really fast on the water!
