This unique bunny has a lot going for her, from her unique design to her name. Despite her emotionless look, Ruby is a ball of energy and will definitely bring some sunshine to your island. Get to know her in this Ruby Villager Guide!
Who Is Ruby Animal Crossing: New Horizons?
Ruby is a rabbit villager with a Peppy personality. She was first introduced in Animal Crossing: Wild World and has since showed up in all succeeding games, most recently in New Horizons. Here’s hoping we’ll see her in the next game, too!
Ruby’s Name
Ruby gets her English name from the scarlet color of her eyes and her overall color theme. She is an albino rabbit, which is why her eyes are red like ruby gems. She references this unique feature in her favorite saying: “You can always take the red-eye.”
Meanwhile, her original Japanese name is Luna, which means moon in Latin. This is most likely a reference to the Asian myth of the moon rabbit, which is about a white rabbit living on the moon and pounding something (either food or an elixir) with a mortar and pestle.
Both names have cool origins, don’t you think?
Ruby’s Looks
Ruby stands out from the rest of the rabbit villagers due to her interesting design and curious look. She is an albino rabbit with white fur, round red eyes, and reddish inner ears. Her most striking features are definitely her red eyes that glisten like ruby gems. Her inner ears also complete her red theme.
She has three dots as freckles on each of her cheeks, which sorta look like craters of the moon and can tie back to her moon rabbit reference.
You’ve probably noticed her blank expression. Ruby has a poker face almost all the time, except when she’s happy or upset. She will mostly express her emotions through her eyes.
Throughout the games, she always wears a version of her rabbit shirt. In Wild World and City Folk, it was called a Bunny Shirt. In New Leaf, it was Bunny Tee.
Now in New Horizons, it’s the Rabbit Tee. All shirts are in the color of mint, with a smiling rabbit print or patch. The rabbit actually looks like Ruby, which makes the shirt very fitting for her!
Ruby is one curious-looking bunny, but interact with her more and you’ll see her different facets. She’s more than just a poker face!
Ruby’s Catchphrase
Ruby ends her sentence with “li’l ears” in the English localization. This is definitely a nice little nickname she says to the player, with a bit of reference to the cute ears bunnies have.
In Japanese, her catchphrase is actually “futsuuni” and seems to be a cute slang a lot of younger people use. According to this study, it is used as an intensifier. Totally far out, Ruby!
Ruby’s Personality
Ruby is part of the Peppy gang! Peppy villagers are known for their bright and bubbly attitude, and although she doesn’t give off that vibe at first, Ruby is definitely one energetic bunny!
Peppy villagers are very friendly and can get along with most villagers. They can talk about snacking and eating with Lazy villagers, active pastimes like dancing and running with Jocks and hanging out peacefully with nice and pleasant Normal villagers.
Their excitable nature can either be contagious or too much. Their over-the-top behavior can clash with Snooty’s refined nature or Cranky’s “get off my lawn” mood. If they interact with their fellow Peppy friends, expect an explosion of energy! Whether that’s positive or negative energy, well, you just have to find out.
Ruby’s House
Ruby has one of the most fascinating houses in Animal Crossing. You wouldn’t expect it from the outside, with muted colors and features like a deep-green Thatch Roof, brick walls, and a pink Simple Door. However, the magic happens when you step inside.
Her house’s interior theme loops back to her moon rabbit concept. Her floor has the Lunar Surface flooring, with Starry-Sky Wall as the wallpaper, and a Moon as the centerpiece. She also has Astronaut Suits guarding her door, as well as Asteroids decorated around her room.
Her moon rabbit and the space-themed house are consistent throughout the series. In previous games, she also had a star-filled wallpaper, the moon’s surface as her floor, and even a mochi pestle! This is one house in Animal Crossing you want to visit.
Ruby’s Popularity
In Peppy or rabbit villager popularity lists and discussions, Ruby consistently gets ranked high by Animal Crossing communities, blogs, and news sites.
Most people mention her character design and house as reasons, and being in older games of the series helps with her popularity as well.
Chance To Get Ruby
From a kind soul’s observations regarding looking for villagers through Mystery Islands, it seems that the game rolls for species first, then personality. There are a lot of Peppy rabbits, so you need a lot of luck to meet Ruby through island hopping. Ready your Nook Miles Tickets, folks!
The good news is that Ruby has an Amiibo card available, you can get her through that if the Mystery Island or Campsite routes are not yielding anything.
