As of December 31, 2022, Nintendo updated Nintendo Switch’s best-selling games!
Nintendo Switch quickly became one of the best-selling game systems ever after its 2017 release, selling 122.55 million units by the end of 2022.
The Switch now outsells the PlayStation 4 and trails only the PlayStation 2 and the Nintendo DS.
Unsurprisingly, Switch also surpasses Game Boy in global sales just this year.
Nintendo Switch games coming to the spotlight
Nintendo Switch’s hardware sales are not the only bright spot – several first-party exclusives.
These new entries are, without a doubt, sold tens of millions of copies.
- The Legend of Zelda
- Animal Crossing
- Mario
- Pokemon
A few more details to add
On December 31, 2022, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sold an impressive 52 million copies on the Nintendo Switch.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate came in second with 30.44 million units sold, while Animal Crossing: New Horizons led with 41.59 million.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, a critically acclaimed game, sold nearly as well as Pokemon Sword and Shield with 29 million copies on Switch.

Other honorable mentions
Despite selling 25.12 million copies since its 2017 release, Super Mario Odyssey surprisingly ranks second only to Pokemon in lifetime sales.
Nintendo confirms that since their November 2022 release, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet have sold an impressive 20.61 million units despite debates over their visual quality and technical concerns.
Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee!, Super Mario Party, and Ring Fit Adventure. comprise the remaining entries; no game on the list has sold fewer than 15 million copies.
While most of the roster consists of well-known brands, Ring Fit Adventure stands out as the most unexpected addition.
What’s cooking for Nintendo Switch?
Since the release of the Nintendo Switch almost six years ago, speculation regarding a possible successor has been ongoing.
There were even rumors that Nintendo will release a mid-generation upgrade with better graphics, but this product has yet to be seen in the wild.
Unfortunately, as interesting as it is, we can only wait for future statements regarding rumors — otherwise, we might get disappointed just as how we did with the Switch Pro cancellation.
