MTG Arena Codes – Ultimate Guide

Magic: The Gathering arena originally launched as a beta way back in 2017. It has since seen releases on Windows, Mac, and most recently  IOS and Android in March 2021.

The game is a pretty standard card collection game that follows the rules of the Magic the Gathering tabletop game.

Players create a deck by accumulating cards. These decks are then used in battles against either other players or in AI tournaments.

Is MTG Arena free?

The game follows a freemium model. It is free to play yet players are actively encouraged to spend real cash to buy gems and in-game gold. 

These in-game currencies are then used to either buy more cards, boosters or to enter tournaments.

Unsurprisingly the model has attracted the ire of long-term MTG fans. 

The issue is that at first glance the game appears to be free. However, in reality, long hours of grinding are required to make any progress if players don’t want to spend real money.

To try and ease player anger and to keep them happy. The makers, Wizards of the Coast, came up with a novel solution.

Whilst gamers are still encouraged to spend real-world money to progress in-game the makers also routinely hand out Magic the Gathering Arena free codes.

These MTG promo codes give players all kinds of lovely goodies that they can use in-game.

For example, they can be the best way to get cards like Ashiok, Teferi, and Lilliana MTG.

Unfortunately, many of these codes either have expiry dates or are single-use. This can make it a pain to keep track of which codes are currently available.

When a  game requires as much grinding as MTG arena you want to make sure you can grab every code available.

To aid you in this we have curated a list of all the free MTG arena codes still redeemable today as well as where to find premium codes.

How to use your Promo codes

First things first. How do we redeem our MTG arena codes? Well, if you’re playing on PC, it couldn’t be easier.

1. Open the in-game store. It can be found in the top menu. 
2. Hidden away in the top right it will say “Redeem Code”, click it
3. Enter a code and click enter. Be careful though. Codes are case-sensitive.

Mobile

You could be forgiven for getting a little confused if you’ve been trying to redeem MTG Arena promo codes on the mobile version. It’s not an easy task. 

Unfortunately, there is currently no direct way to redeem MTG arena codes on IOS or Android instead you have two options.

• Login to your account through the windows or Mac applications and follow the steps above.

• Visit the game’s website and redeem the codes there. This is quicker and easier than downloading the game again. 

Mind you, Magic the Gathering arena codes can only be redeemed once. This means you won’t be able to spam your way to a full deck. 

Furthermore, new players should hold off on redeeming promo codes until they’ve opened all the new player experience decks in-game.

This is because duplicate cards gained from the booster packs won’t be added to their collection.

Free codes: Non-Unique MTG Arena Promo Codes

Unfortunately, most codes are unique and require some sort of payment. However, there are ways to get free codes. 

The best way is through the Promo codes that Wizards of the Coast occasionally release.

These often have expiry dates so we’ve only listed codes that are either available indefinitely or which will be staying available for a while.

Each edition of the game gets its own special promo code. Each code gifts the player with packs from its relative set which is a pretty good start. The MTG Arena codes 2021 are:

• PlayTheros: Gets you 3 Theros Beyond Death Packs
• PlayIkoria: Gain 3 Ikoria Lair of Behemoths Packs
• PlayZendikar: 3 Zendikar Rising Packs
• PlayKaldheim: Get 3 Kaldeheim Packs
• PLAYDND: Acquire 3 Forgotten realms Packs
• PLAYMID: 3 Midnight Hunt Packs
• TRYKALADESH: This will get you a remastered Pack of Kaladesh
• PlayStrixhaven: 3 Strixhaven Packs
• PLAYM21: 3 2021 Core Set Packs

No one seems to know the expiry dates for these codes so it’s probably better to input them sooner rather than later. 

XP codes

If you’re after some free XP you can use the code LevelUP to get 2,000 free experience points. 

MTG Arena Cosmetic Codes

If you’re getting a little bored of the stock artwork for cards, do not worry. 

Besides MTG arena promo codes for new cards, there are also codes available to customize the look of your deck. 

Think of these as the Magic the Gathering equivalent of custom weapons skins. 

• SuperScry: Opt card +style
• FoilFungus: Deathblood Thallid card +style
• WRITTENINSTONE: Nahiri, Storm of Stone style
• ShinyGoblinPirate: Fanatical Firebrand card +style
• SparkleDruid: Druid of the Cowl card + style
• OVERTHEMOON: Gets you the Arlinn, Voice of the Pack style for cards

• ENLIGHTENME: Narset, Parter of Veils style
• INNERDEMON: Grants you the Ob Nixilis style

All these codes expire in January 2023 so no need to rush!

Cards sleeve codes

There are five Strixhaven Houses and each one has its own custom sleeve.  A sleeve is another type of MTG cosmetic.

Luckily for us, these sleeves are available through more free promo codes.

• RockJocks: Lorehold Sleeve
• Debate Duelists: Silverquill Sleeve
• MathWhizzes: Quandrix Sleeve
• SwampPunks: Witherblood SLeeve
• ArtClub: Prismari Sleeve

All these codes have an undefined expiry date so it’s probably a good idea to grab them before Wizards of the Coast decides to revoke them.

Premium Single Use MTGA codes

Once you’ve exhausted the supply of free promo codes it’s time to look at single-use MTG arena codes. There’s a variety of ways to get your hands on these codes, but all of them will cost you money.

How to buy MTG Arena Codes

You can get MTG arena codes when you buy Magic the Gathering paper products. This is more of a boon if you’re a physical player as well as a digital player. 

The cool thing about this option is that you’re getting something physical with your money rather than just spending money in an in-game store. 

Who knows? You might even end up with a new hobby

Not all MTG products come with Arena codes, so we have to be a little careful. Especially when looking at older products. Below you can find details of all products which currently come with arena codes.

Starter Kits

Starter kits are a gateway into the world of the real MTG paper card game. Buying these is a great way to earn a  few free promo cards whilst also getting yourself ready for the tabletop.

The 2021 arena Starter Kit has two decks and comes with a code that you can redeem twice.

This means that you and a friend can potentially both use the code and split the cost of the kit.

The 2021 Starter Kit can be found for around $15 on Amazon. You can pick up earlier start kits for less, but you run the risk of paying for codes that have already expired.

Planeswalker Decks

Once you’ve set yourself up with a starter deck you can start thinking about the Planeswalker Decks. 

These decks are aimed at newbies and like the starter kits are a good idea if you’re flirting with the idea of starting physical play too. 

These packs tend to be power level balanced so newbies can play together so once again you can split the cost by bringing in a friend if you like. 

There are ten different decks you can buy. Each deck you buy comes with a promo code that unlocks the corresponding deck in MTG Arena. 

The decks vary in price from around $20 to $50 and are often discounted if you buy more than one at a time.

Note that only the newer packs come with the magic arena codes you’re looking for. Make sure to only buy decks that came out post Guilds of Ravnica and you should be golden.

Prerelease Sets

If you play around with the physical packs from the Planeswalker decks and Starter kits and find you’re having fun it might be time to think about Prerelease codes.

Just before a new set of cards is released select stores that are partnered with Wizards of the Coast get to host a prerelease tournament. 

This allows players to try out all the new cards before they are released. Read about it here.

Besides getting the chance to try out all the cards first these Prerelease sets come with an MTG Arena code.

What this code unlocks differs depending on the prerelease. They used to be pretty underwhelming but these days, if you buy a prerelease set, you’ll receive a code for 6 decks.

Just be warned. You can’t attend more than one prerelease and attempt to stockpile codes. Each account can only use one prerelease code for each set. 

Two Prerelease events are coming up. Each will have new MTG Arena codes. Innistrad Crimson Vow in November 2021 and then Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty sometime in Q1 2022.

Secret Lair Arena codes

The final option is codes obtained from the Secret Lair. Ever heard of it? It’s a secret!

Well not really. These are special limited-edition cards that come up on the official MTG Wizards store once in a while.

These are timed exclusives so it can be easy to miss out. However, if you manage to grab a pack you’ll be rewarded with special MTG arena sleeve art.

These cards don’t come cheap though. They can cost anywhere from $20 to $300 and not all of them come with promo codes. 

Buying Arena Codes

Finally, if you’re not interested in buying physical card packs but have your heart set on expanding your decks you can think about just going out and buying Magic the Gathering Arena Codes.

Of course, this is a risky business.

Most magic arena codes can only be redeemed once so you run the risk of forking out money for a magic arena code that has already been claimed, or a code that was never valid, to begin with.

Avoid buying codes from dodgy sites or people in MTG forums. At best there’s a good chance they’re scalpers and you’ll pay through the nose for cards that aren’t worth it.

At worst, you’ll get nothing.

MTG Arena Code generator

Alongside suspicious code resellers another MTG arena codes scam you need to watch out for is MTG Arena Code generators. 

Certain websites claim to have MTG Arena Code generators that will provide you with an unlimited number of Magic the Gathering Arena codes for free. But nothing in life is free.

These sites have no way of knowing what MTG Arena redeem codes Wizards of the Coast has created.

Your best-case scenario is you waste time using a useless tool that generates random codes which then won’t work when you try to redeem them.

Worst case scenario is you end up with a computer full of malware, ransomware, and viruses and still no free MTG arena codes.

Finally, even if these generators did work, it would be stealing. Any code generated would be a code that someone else has potentially paid for and wouldn’t be able to use.

How Do you Get Free Gems on MTGA?

There are two reliable ways to get “free” gems in MTG Arena. 

The best option is through drafts. Drafts are tournaments that are either free or more often cost gold. 

The Best of 1 draft costs 5,000 gold to enter but you can win up to 950 gems if you do well. As your deck grows and you get better at the game you can enter more competitive tournaments with bigger payouts. 

Keep doing the tournaments until you bank 3400 gems. Now you can purchase the Mastery Pass. 

Keep leveling it up and you’ll regain up to 1800 gems and earn a whole host of rewards you would normally spend gems on anyway. 

This is grind intensive but between the drafts and battle pass, you’ll never have to spend a dime in the in-game store.

You can also track down and follow top Magic the Gathering contributors on Twitch, YouTube, and Twitter. 

Occasionally they’ll partner up with WotC for big Gem giveaways. For example, creaYTors gave away 100,000 gems a couple of years ago. These giveaways aren’t that regular, but all it will cost you is a few minutes on social media.

Conclusion

Free MTG arena codes can be difficult to find. As you can see above there is a decent selection of Free Promo codes, but you will probably find the leg up they give you won’t last long.

At the end of the day, MTG Arena is a freemium game, so it makes sense that Wizards of the Coast are careful with how many free codes they put out there. 

It is possible to play the game without spending a dime, but it requires a lot of grinding which can spoil the fun.

This leaves you with three options.

Firstly, you can just give up when you hit the paywall and look for another freemium game to pick up for a while.

Second, you can bite the bullet and start spending money in the game store on gems. Then spend those gems on the cards you want.

Or third, you can drop some dollars on the real-world card decks mentioned above. This option still costs you money but at least you’re getting something with actual cash value in return.
