Recently released images showcase the intricate work of the Royal School of Needlework’s embroidery team, as they conserve the Robe of State for King Charles and the Robe of Estate for Queen Camilla.
The King’s Robe of State, crafted from crimson velvet, is a cherished piece previously worn by King George VI during his own coronation in 1937.
The velvet has undergone careful preservation, with the lining and gold lace expertly conserved by Ede and Ravenscroft.
Queen Camilla’s Historical Robes
Queen Camilla will don the Robe of State originally created for Queen Elizabeth, King Charles’ mother, during her coronation in 1953.
This remarkable crimson velvet robe has undergone meticulous conservation, including adjustments made by Ede and Ravenscroft in preparation for the momentous event.
Additionally, a new Robe of Estate, designed by Ede and Ravenscroft and meticulously hand-embroidered by the Royal School of Needlework, has been crafted exclusively for Queen Camilla. Made from luxurious purple velvet, it perfectly complements the King’s Robe of Estate.
Symbolism and Design of Queen Camilla’s Robe
The intricately designed train of Queen Camilla’s Robe of Estate draws inspiration from nature and the environment. Embellished with images of bees, a beetle, and various plants, the design pays homage to the personal favorites and significant elements of the royal couple.
Among the featured flora are Lily of the Valley, a flower dear to both Queen Elizabeth and Camilla, and myrtle, symbolizing hope. Delphinium, representing King Charles’ favorite flower and Camilla’s birth month of July, adds a personal touch.
The robe also showcases the “Alchemilla Mollis,” or Lady’s Mantle, symbolizing love and comfort, as well as Maidenhair Fern, representing purity, and cornflowers, signifying love and tenderness.
