Starfield might just be the biggest game release till GTA 6 and I just have to say this. Despite Baldur’s Gate, the new Legend of Zelda DLC, and Assassin’s Creed Mirage, Starfield is the talk of the gaming town and even more so after their GamesCom showing.
Even if Starfield gets at least 80% of what Bethesda’s shown in their trailer and gameplay deep dive, it will be revolutionary. And based on reviews, I’ll be spending a lot of hours on this.
But there’s a more burning question and one I’ve been asking too.
Will Starfield be on PS5?
I like to keep things simple. I have my PS4 and an Xbox Game Pass that lets me play Starfield with the Old Mars Skin Pack.
But I do plan to get my PS5 by October for Mirage and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora.
So?
Will Starfield ever be on PS5?
A better question – will Bethesda ever make games for PS5?
Well since Microsoft acquired Zenimax (that’s the company that owns our Bethesda), Microsoft is most likely to keep Bethesda games Xbox exclusives.
Now, according to them, that’s just a counter-reaction to Sony’s aggressive strategy to keep top games PlayStation exclusives.
That Deathloop was launched as a PlayStation exclusive and remained so for a long time before making its way into Xbox is the reason why Microsoft also acquired Activision Blizzard.
Although this does paint the picture that Microsoft’s out there buying gaming studios to get a better share in a market where they’ve lost out to Sony, it does make sense.
Why?
Always better to have competition than a monopoly which Sony would have had by now.
I’ll just add this in – Microsoft came in for Bethesda the moment Starfield hit the pipeline.
Will Bethesda games ever come to PS5?
Yes. Microsoft intends to expand its Xbox inventory and make Xbox exclusives on release to be available for PS5, and Switch. This includes Bethesda games as well and very much includes Starfield too. But PS5 owners may need to wait for Xbox games to migrate. With Xbox, Microsoft caters to both console and PC gamers so pushing the games for PlayStation and Switch will come secondary.
Also, we can’t really be hard on the gaming studios for this.
Bethesda reps have said that the likes of Starfield wouldn’t release this year if they had to do it across both Xbox and PlayStation.
Starfield PS5 Release Date
I’d say Starfield will release on PlayStations in mid-2024 or even before that. Bethesda would like to capitalize on the PlayStation crowd before GTA 6 takes it all away (and we know it will since Rockstar will not let us down with GTA).
But there are a few variables to that happening.
Most important is whether Starfield lives up to the hype.
I expected all Starfield Constellation Editions to get sold out. After all, this is Bethesda’s first new title release in over a quarter of a century, and they do have a cult fan following thanks to Skyrim, among others.
Starfield should release on PS5 although I’m not too sure it will for Switch.
While PS5s can handle Starfield requirements, I am sure Switch won’t. It’s just a case of processing power and capacity.
Another variable is migrating a game the size of Starfield to PlayStation. This requires a lot of dev hours and Bethesda does not have that right now.
And considering how previous Bethesda releases and Early Access events went, bugs will run their course.
Starfield will release on PS5 even though there’s no official date or announcement. It’s only a matter of time before Bethesda (and Microsoft) start thinking about adding the PS5 audience to the game. But right now, they have more pressing issues to take care of first. Till then, if you have a PS5, sit tight and enjoy Mirage or Mortal Kombat 1.
