GTA V was released in 2018. It took Rockstar, and Nintendo, 3 years to develop a GTA for Switch.
Now that Switch 2’s already demoed at Gamescom 23, GTA VI may be positioned to release across all platforms, from Xbox to PS to Switch.
But will GTA 6 be cross platform? Will it support cross play?
GTA 6: Cross Platform or Not
Unlike Bethesda, Rockstar can choose to release games on both Xbox and PlayStation networks as well as on Steam.
While Sony and Microsoft continue to wrestle for the gaming market, Rockstar is owned by Take-Two who’s already in the top 10 biggest gaming video game companies on the planet.
So, there’s a really slim chance that Rockstar (or Take Two) will get acquired by either Microsoft or Sony before the GTA 6 release.
If that had to happen it would have, before Rockstar’s official statement that GTA 6 is in active development.
So, will GTA 6 be cross-platform?
Yes. GTA 6 should launch on all top platforms including Xbox, PlayStation and Steam/PC.
Whether cross-platform compatibility will extend for Switch depends on Nintendo’s Switch 2 release.
Will GTA 6 be Cross-Play Compatible?
Cross-play compatibility is limited to only a few popular games like Minecraft, Genshin, Fortnite, Among Us, among others.
We expected GTA Online to be crossplay but it never turned out that way and it might now even with GTA 6.
Crossplay compatibility comes down to a lot of dev hours. But more importantly, Microsoft and Sony are playing a huge game of chess.
So, unless they make amends, few games will get crossplay going forward.
For a game of this magnitude, GTA 6 is least likely to get it.
Unless Nintendo comes into the picture and strikes a deal with either of the big boys.
This would technically lead to GTA 6 having crossplay on either Xbox and Switch or PlayStation and Switch.
Between these two, Xbox and Switch crossplay has a higher chance of happening with Microsoft actively partnering with Nintendo for cross-platform compatibility of Xbox exclusives like Mortal Kombat.
So, will GTA 6 have crossplay?
Maybe. Microsoft teaming up with Nintendo to bring Xbox games to Switch and vice versa is well on the cards. The only dependency is how good the upcoming Switch 2 will be in terms of gaming performance compared to the latest-gen consoles. If it’s powerful enough, we might see Microsoft and Nintendo putting a mighty squeeze on Sony and GTA 6 getting cross-platform plus backward compatibility!
