Few gaming franchises have a cult following 30 years on and still top charts.
Mortal Kombat started back in 1992. This is 2023. We’ve shifted from arcades to PCs and consoles. But it’s still Mortal Kombat and NetherRealm Studios names this new addition to the series Mortal Kombat 1. It’s a restart, a much needed one, a welcome one and so far, a good one too.
Mortal Kombat 1 Patch Notes Updates and Early Review
Mortal Kombat 1 will officially release on 19th September but the game’s available to Premium Edition and Kollector’s Edition buyers since the 12th.
We already have the first set of patches.
Release date drama will be high MK1 as was always expected but I’m happy the devs are very proactive about it.
Mortal Kombat 1 Review: First Look and Play
This time out, MK1 has removed the fluff, concentrated efforts on the best facets of the gameplay, listened to the fans and pushed in new features.
We’ll see a lot less spamming with easy moves that don’t have counters and essentially defeat the purpose of the game.
We’re also back to a single-meter-for-all setup.
MK1 rejuvenates the air combo systems and brings back higher standard damage coefficient to make battles more about skills and less about character specials.
But the biggest MK1 news is the Kameo system. To give you a hint, Kameo characters are assisting characters you can call up in-battle to blend with your main character. You can even call up standard characters as Kameos. Here’s more about Kameo and MK1 gameplay.
Overall, fans are more than happy. MK1 has a lot of changes from MK11 but it still holds to the essence that is Mortal Kombat, including the etcetera fight scenes.
There are negatives showing up early. One of them is a hastily paced narrative. New characters are introduced as characters in the storyline. Fighting skills, specials, combos, etc., are for you to discover.
This might be intentional.
MK1 wants you to make your way through the characters and find their sweet spots and which ones fit your playstyle.
I’ll also put this in right here – MK1 characters don’t have many surprises to them, and we get to see familiar faces. Here’s everything about MK1 characters.

MK1 Kollector’s Edition
Is Mortal Kombat 1 Kollector’s Edition sold out?
MK1 Kollector’s Edition is almost sold out. Some digital retailers continue to show the Edition as in stock which is surely limited by now. Offline retailers are mostly out of stock and may restock or show stock post-release. If you’re thinking about buying one as a long-time fan, don’t wait. MK1 is the series’ comeback while paying due respect to the first Mortal Kombat arcade game so grabbing the collector’s edition makes complete sense!
MK1 is a probable contender for GoTY based solely on fan reception although Starfield is gunning for that big. But with reimagined character designs, a new storyline, hugely overhauled combat mechanics and lots of new features, Mortal Kombat 1 seems to be back with a bang. It has already won over the MK1 cult. Question is – can it bring new gamers into the franchise.
