Mojang’s Minecraft has won the hearts of many with its unique interpretation of what an open-world sandbox truly means.
With that said, the game has now taken stride into the PS4 which begs the question, what version of Minecraft is present on the PS4?
In this article, you will get to know exactly that and much more!
What version of Minecraft is on PS4?
There are 3 main versions of Minecraft: Minecraft Bedrock, Minecraft Java, and Minecraft Windows.
The Minecraft version found on the PlayStation 4 is Minecraft Bedrock.
Bedrock Edition consists of Pocket Edition, Windows 10 Edition, Xbox One Edition, PS4 Edition, and Nintendo Switch Edition. The PS4 edition of Minecraft is the Legacy Console Edition version of the game, created by 4J Studios and Mojang Studios.
The game was publicized on August 20, 2013, at Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Gamescom booth and could be found for $19.99 on the PlayStation Store between September 4, 2014, and December 9, 2019. Existing digital purchasers can still access, re-download, and play this version.
On October 3, 2014, a retail edition was launched that is still available for purchase. Players of the PlayStation 4 Edition, like those of the Xbox One and Nintendo Switch editions, have the option of downloading the Bedrock version for free.
However, not all the DLCs will transfer.
What Are The Differences Between Minecraft Java, Bedrock, and Windows Edition?
Minecraft Java
- Minecraft Java is the game’s oldest version, launched in 2009. This version is written in JavaScript, a programming language used to run games on Windows, Linux, and Mac computers.
- Minecraft Java requires a Mojang account to play and has its own launcher where users may choose which version of the game they’re playing. It contains several technical features not yet included in other editions and is the most accessible version to alter, making it best for players who want to create and use Minecraft mods or resource packs.
Minecraft Bedrock
- Minecraft Bedrock features the same game premise, although there have been many minor in-game modifications. The most essential feature of this version is that it allows for cross-platform matchmaking, owing to the ‘Better Together‘ update.
- Simply put, Bedrock allows all compatible devices to play together on a single server hosted by the in-game client. Players on mobile PE, consoles, PC, raspberry pi, Fire TVs, and PSPs can only play together in multiplayer mode if they are using Minecraft Bedrock.
- And while this edition technically lags below Minecraft Java in terms of features and is more difficult to customize, Minecraft Bedrock is the only version that has access to the Minecraft Marketplace where players may purchase quality assured, community-generated maps and customizations.
Minecraft Windows
- Minecraft Windows is essentially the PC version of Bedrock. The two versions have little to no differences after the recent update, and many consider Minecraft to now have only two versions: Bedrock and Java.
To summarize, the version of Minecraft found on PS4 is the Bedrock edition. This version is best for gamers who enjoy playing multiplayer and is the only version with access to the Minecraft Marketplace.
