DC co-boss James Gunn has announced on Twitter that his upcoming project, Superman: Legacy, is moving into pre-production. While sources have reported that the physical production of the movie will begin in early 2024, the movie is set to release on July 11, 2025.
Superman: Legacy Goes into Pre-Production
Gunn took to Twitter and Instagram on April 18, which marked the Superman Anniversary Day, to share the news about the movie’s progress.
He wrote, “I’m honored to be a part of the legacy. And what better day than #SupermanAnniversary Day to dive fully into early pre-production on #SupermanLegacy? Costumes, production design, and more now up and running.”
Superman: Legacy is the first feature project under James Gunn and co-DC chief Peter Safran’s new DC Universe, Gods and Monsters.
The movie will not be an origins story, instead it will focus on Superman’s struggle to balance his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing.
As Safran revealed at a DC press conference in January, Superman is “the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, he’s kindness in a world that thinks of kindness as old fashioned.”
Furthermore, the movie will introduce a new actor to portray the iconic role of Man of Steel. While the details about the cast have not been revealed yet, fans are eagerly waiting to see who will be selected for the role.
Superman: Legacy will hit theaters on July 11, 2025, while ‘The Batman Part II’ directed by Matt Reeves, will release on October 3, 2025.
During his press tour for Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3, Gunn had recently stated in a Rolling Stone interview that he learned a lot from making the ‘Guardians’ movies but Superman: Legacy will have a completely different vibe.
Superman: Legacy Release Date and Other DC Projects
Meanwhile, cinema owners will get a glimpse of the highly anticipated Warner Bros/DC movie, The Flash, directed by Andy Muschietti, and starring Ezra Miller in the lead role.
Gunn has already expressed his excitement for the movie and praised it as “probably one of the greatest superhero movies ever made.”
The DC Universe has seen its share of ups and downs in recent years, but the upcoming slate of movies indicates that the studio is now focused on bringing new stories and perspectives to its fans.
With Superman: Legacy, fans are looking forward to seeing the iconic hero in a new light, as he struggles with the challenges of being a Kryptonian in a human world.
