What is the Stellaris Infinity Machine?

With the Leviathans DLC pack that was released for the widely-celebrated Stellaris, we got a whole host of additions to the strategy space epic. And along with additions such as Guardians and Enclaves, we got access to a rather peculiar storyline or quest called, well, you guessed it, the Stellaris Infinity Machine.

The Infinity Machine is one of several new Guardians introduced in Leviathans, housed in a giant black hole called Gargantua. It is the only Guardian that does not immediately go into kill mode when it meets the player (that’s a relief).

Initially, you may just decide to observe the Infinity Machine, but after a few in-game years, it will send out a transmission to your fleet and start a ‘special project’ that is going to take 360 days to complete.

Additionally, to complete this project, you’ll need a Level 3 Scientist.

    The Infinity Machine Quest

In tune with the rest of the game, this quest can go in several pathways.

If you go to the local Curator’s Enclave, they cannot decipher the reason behind the sphere’s existence. After the event has started, you simply must observe and keep reading your event log in order to register all of the findings that you have made about the sphere.

However, you can then ask for a way to attack and defeat it (if you are worried about it being a potential threat). The Enclave will provide you with a modifier for 5000 credits.

This modifier will allow you to deal an additional 25% damage to the Infinity Machine.

If you decide to attack the Infinity Machine, it will become hostile and rain hell down on you, so make sure you have a big enough fleet.

Once you take it down, the Machine sends out a transmission into an unknown location. You can then extract minerals and some Prestige out of the victory, or a Tech boost to your Artificial Intelligence.

That pretty much wraps it up.

The second route, however, is much more interesting. If you decide to wait for the Machine to reach out to you, you can have a conversation with it. The Machine sends out a rhythmic pulse, and the reason is unknown.

A while later, you’ll require the help of your Level 3 Scientist to get the project that you got from the Machine finished. Once you finish the project, you will be presented with yet more options.

    Stellaris Infinity Machine Rewards

After you finish the project, one of two things can happen. The hack that you tried to pull on the Machine will not work, forcing you to leave it alone.

Or, if the hack is successful, the Machine will gift you either of the following –

    • Zero Point Power Technology – With Zero Point Power Tech, you get the most efficient and limitless energy source known in Stellaris.
    • Positronic AI Technology – Used with Synthetics in order to upgrade your research, administration and combat capabilities.

If you have already researched both, you will get a 1000-5000 Society Research, as well as a permanent 5% Research Output empire modifier.

After the event is complete, the Guardian moves into the Black Hole and makes it smaller, now called Pantagruel.

Want to know more? Here’s how you can manage your empire and expand your borders in Stellaris.
