Marvel Studios has released a new trailer for its upcoming espionage series Secret Invasion, featuring Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. Set to premiere on June 21 on Disney+. The show returns Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, Don Cheadle as James Rhodes, a.k.a. War Machine, and Ben Mendelsohn as Talos.
The Secret Invasion trailer debuted on April 2 during ESPN’s presentation of a Sunday Night Baseball game between the Philadelphia Phillies and Texas Rangers. It also introduces new cast members Emilia Clarke, Olivia Colman, and Kingsley Ben-Adir to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The series is based on the 2008 Secret Invasion comic book storyline written by Brian Michael Bendis.
Who’s Who in Secret Invasion?
According to sources, Ben-Adir is set to play the main villain in the show, while Emilia Clarke’s character, G’iah, will play Talos’ daughter. Clarke says that G’iah’s experience growing up as a refugee “hardened her. You get a kind of punk feeling from this girl.” Diplomacy has not worked, so radical and sometimes violent action is needed, says G’iah and Gravik.
The Return of Nick Fury
Secret Invasion marks the full-fledged return of Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with the character last being prominently featured in 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home. In that film, the version of Fury was revealed to be a shape-shifting Skrull, and the real Fury was revealed to be working covertly somewhere out in space.
The Series and Inspiration
Secret Invasion is created by Kyle Bradstreet, who also serves as showrunner. The Disney+ series represents the third installment in Marvel’s phase five entries, which kicked off with the feature Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania in February. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will follow in May. Other projects on the horizon include the Disney+ series Echo and Season 2 of Loki, as well as The Marvels, a sequel to Captain Marvel.
Schwartz, the executive producer for Secret Invasion, said the series would be inspired by Brian Michael Bendis’ 2008 Secret Invasion event series. He also mentioned that contemporary television shows Homeland and The Americans, which center on “the clash between loyalty and identity,” were also of interest to the creators of Secret Invasion.
“This is a darker show,” Smulders teased at the Marvel Studios Comic-Con presentation last July. “It’s going to be an exciting thriller. You’ll never know who people are — are they a Skrull, or are they human?”
The Secret Invasion trailer promises an action-packed and suspenseful show, with Nick Fury fighting off Skrulls, who have turned on him and Talos. The return of Nick Fury to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the introduction of new characters played by Emilia Clarke, Olivia Colman, and Kingsley Ben-Adir add to the excitement of the series. The show draws inspiration from the 2008 Secret Invasion comic book storyline and contemporary television shows like Homeland and The Americans. The clash between loyalty and identity will be a central theme of the series. Fans can look forward to a thrilling and darker show when Secret Invasion premieres on Disney+ on June 21.
