Renowned kitchenware brand PYREX is in hot water as TikTok users report their supposedly indestructible dishware is shattering, coinciding with the company filing for bankruptcy protection.
Breaking Pyrex Claims Heat Up on TikTok
In a community perfect for food enthusiasts to share their culinary creations, TikTok users have recently been sharing their experiences of PYREX dishware breaking unexpectedly.
A user named ‘gothowl’ shared a video claiming that their PYREX cake pan shattered in their oven while baking at 325 degrees Fahrenheit.
Fellow TikTokers and home chefs have been left bewildered, but one user, ‘Cooking at Pam’s Place,’ has explained why this is happening.
The Crucial Difference Between PYREX and Pyrex
PYREX, a company known for its superior cookware, specializes in products made from borosilicate glass.
This material has a significantly lower thermal expansion rate than standard tempered glass, making it more resistant to breaking under extreme temperatures. Hence, the common belief that PYREX is virtually indestructible.
However, there seems to be a widespread misunderstanding between ‘PYREX’ and ‘Pyrex.’ One of PYREX’s parent companies, Corning, sold licensing rights to other companies to produce kitchenware under the ‘Pyrex’ brand, spelled in lowercase.
These products, unlike their original counterparts, are likely made with tempered glass, making them more susceptible to breakage at extreme temperatures.
A Shattering Blow for Pyrex’s Owner, Instant Brands
This debacle comes at a challenging time for Pyrex’s owner, Instant Brands, which has recently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy due to “tighter credit and higher interest rates,” as reported by abc7news. The company is now undergoing restructuring.
The drama doesn’t stop there. Instant Brands is also facing a Class Action lawsuit related to the shattering cookware issue, highlighting the potential consequence of the confusion between ‘PYREX’ and ‘Pyrex.’
Shattering Debacle Adds to TikTok’s Foodie Controversies
The PYREX situation is the latest food-related controversy to hit TikTok, which recently witnessed a debate sparked by a McDonald’s worker claiming their ice cream machine was broken.
The situation underscores the profound impact that social media, particularly TikTok, can have on consumers’ understanding and trust in household brands.
It also underlines the importance of clear brand messaging, particularly when it comes to product safety. As consumers, and TikTokers, continue to discuss the Pyrex issue, the future of the brand remains uncertain.
