In what seems like a plot straight out of a Hollywood movie, tech magnates Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg could be gearing up for a modern-day gladiator showdown. The venue? None other than Rome’s historic Colosseum, as Italy extends a surprise invitation to the two billionaires.
Tech Titans Turned Modern-Day Gladiators
The internet erupted with excitement after Elon Musk challenged Mark Zuckerberg to a fight on June 20.
The challenge was met with a request for a date from Zuckerberg, setting off global speculation about this unprecedented event.
To the astonishment of many, the Italian government has now stepped into the fray, inviting Musk and Zuckerberg to stage their duel in the 2000-year-old Colosseum, as reported by TMZ Sports.
Italy’s Minister of Culture, Gennaro Sangiuliano, is believed to have extended the invitation to Musk and Zuckerberg, offering the world-renowned landmark as the stage for their showdown.
A Historic Battle in a Historic Venue?
Musk and Zuckerberg, intrigued by the proposal, passed the invitation on to Ultimate Fighting Championship President Dana White, who then got in touch with the Italian Minister.
The Colosseum, one of the seven wonders of the world, hasn’t hosted a significant event, much less a fight, in centuries. With only temporary seating, it can accommodate just a few hundred spectators.
Despite Italian media’s reports of the government denying the offer of the venue, Musk added fuel to the speculation fire by tweeting, “Some chance fight happens in Colosseum.”
Echoing the Epic Battles of the Past
Stoking the hype around the potential fight, Musk quoted General Maximus, Russell Crowe’s character from the iconic film Gladiator: “What we do in life, echoes in eternity.”
If the Colosseum does indeed end up being the venue, it would mark the first time in centuries that a fight has taken place in the historic arena.
In its golden age, the 50,000-capacity stadium regularly witnessed life-or-death battles between gladiators. Today, its ruins can host only a few hundred people and are typically reserved for concerts rather than battles.
Whether this modern gladiator duel between two of the tech industry’s most notable figures will take place is yet to be confirmed.
Nevertheless, the possibility of such a fight taking place in the legendary Colosseum has already captivated the imaginations of people worldwide.
