Kelly Clarkson, the Grammy-winning singer, and host of The Kelly Clarkson Show, recently revealed her daughter’s struggles with dyslexia. During an episode of her show, she spoke with actor Henry Winkler about his latest children’s book, which is his 38th written alongside Lin Oliver.
The fact that Winkler, who is dyslexic, has written so many books despite his learning difference impressed Clarkson.
Clarkson shared that her daughter, River, 8, who also has dyslexia, was getting bullied at school for not being able to read like the other kids.
She expressed her amazement at how common dyslexia is after learning about it during a dyslexia awareness campaign at River’s school, which also listed celebrities who have been open about their learning differences, including Anthony Mackie and Zachary Levi.
Winkler pointed out that River is “part of the tribe,” referring to the one in five people who are born with dyslexia.
He also shared some wise words with Kelly Clarkson’s daughter, telling her that how she learns has nothing to do with how brilliant she is. ‘
Winkler’s kind words made Clarkson emotional, and she joked that her makeup artist would be upset.
Divorce and Parenting Struggles
Clarkson shares her two children, River and Remi, 7, with ex-husband Brandon Blackstock, whom she divorced in 2020. She has been open about the challenges her children have faced following their divorce.
In an interview with “Angie Martinez’s IRL Podcast” in March, she said she asks her kids every night if they are happy and what could make them happier.
Clarkson said her children are honest with her and sometimes express sadness, saying they wish their parents were still together.
As a child of divorce herself, she understands their feelings and validates their emotions for them, explaining that their feelings are not small but significant.
New Album
Clarkson recently announced she will release a new album called Chemistry, with the lead single Mine dropping in April.
The lyrics appear to be about her divorce, and she promised the album would be about “the arc of an entire relationship.” There is no release date for the album yet.
