One of the most treasured games of the mid-2010s, Maxis Studios had created something special with the Sims 4. Their best work in the life-simulation genre and the best game in the same genre by far and wide, the fourth iteration, brought many changes and improvements.
Although the Sims has historically been a single-player-only offering, we set out to find a way that you could enjoy this fantastic life-sim in the best way possible; with real-world friends.
Players who cannot get enough of the life-simulations genre will like alternative games like Sims.
So, without further ado, let’s find out if Sims 4 can be played in multiplayer mode!
Is There Official Multiplayer Support For Sims 4?
Well, no. The Sims series in general revolves around providing some of the best single-player experiences that money can buy, and developers Maxis or EA never really imagined it being that way (although you’d be surprised EA didn’t want it so).
There is history in this, however. EA did try to bring about an online Sims game called the Sims Online way back in 2002, but that was before online gaming saw a true modern boom, and the game had its servers shut down pretty soon, in August 2008.
Is Sims 4 Multiplayer on PC?
Yes, there is a way that you can play Sims 4 with your friends. And that is simply via the S4MP, a mod that enables the same.
S4MP, like many others, is a mod made by community members of the game which allows one PC to act as a server to which 12 other PCs can connect.
How to Play Sims 4 Multiplayer on PC
S4MP allows one PC to act as a server. Up to 12 other PCs can then join said server and play together.
What you’ll need is as follows –
- A PC per player.
- Sims 4, installed on said PC.
- The same expansions and packs as every other PC in the setup
- The mod, installed in the base game folder.
The first thing that you need to do is to save your game.
Save your games people, it’s always important and comes in handy.
And yes, you can use an existing save file. Just make sure that it is on the server PC.
Once you have selected your save and the Sims you want to play with, simply place them in a lot to begin.
Next, you will need to set the lot up. Lots are empty spaces that you can own and set up houses for your Sims to live in.
Choose a lot, and after the house is built, buy the furniture you want for it, renovate and design the interiors. Your lot needs to be ready to go when you go online. Pause time, save, and exit the game.
Now, this can get a little complicated, so strap on.
One of your friends (or you) must create an account on the client side of the mod, S4MP in this case. This will allow you to host the multiplayer session that you want to participate in.
Once you are logged in, simply select the save file that you want to play on, and click on ‘Host Game’. You will be given a unique code that you can share with the other players so that they can join the game.
Similarly, you can join a game by logging in client-side, typing in the room code shared by the host. Now, ‘Join Game’!
Finally, load up the game again, and the origin save file of the multiplayer session that everyone with the code can see. You will receive a notification when you successfully enter the lot and join the multiplayer game session.
After everyone has loaded in, the server PC player can start the in-game time back up again. That’s pretty much it!
Once you are done playing, the server PC can pause the time, open the game’s inbuilt command console, and type in the command ‘disconnect’. This will end the session and you will be able to go back to your normal single-player session.
Can You Play Sims 4 Multiplayer On PS4?
No. While it is true that the Sims 4 is designed as a single-player-only experience, it is also true that PS4s cannot support the extensive modding that PC users can enjoy.
With the way that Sony’s ecosystem is set up, they have more control over things, like modding, citing obvious security concerns.
Modded files are generally considered unsafe. Mostly due to open-source availability and that they are not directly served up by the developer.
In that case, your best bet is just playing the DLC and maybe in the future, there might be in-game mod support that games on console platforms can enjoy.
Is There A Sims 5 Out Soon?
Sims fans have been eagerly awaiting news of Maxis or EA might have for the next installment to the series.
Fret not, as Sims 5, although it may finally not be called that, is under active development at Maxis studios.
They announced it a while back, and it has sent longtime fans into absolute chaos.
Maxis have planned a complete revival for the series, considering things that have changed drastically since the release of the last game.
But, they are also planning to keep the core of the series alive and familiar, to avoid alienating older fans. The project is under development as Project Rene, and we will be sharing more info as it comes our way!
