Dwayne Johnson, also known as “The Rock,” recently announced that he will be starring in the live-action version of the Disney animated movie Moana. The news came during the company’s 2023 shareholder meeting on Monday, where the actor shared a teaser video with his family.
Johnson Promises to Give His All in the Role of Maui
Johnson, who voiced the character Maui in the 2016 original movie, promised to give his all to bring the demigod to life in live-action form.
The upcoming film will be produced by Seven Bucks Productions and Flynn Picture Co. and will feature the return of Moana, Gramma Tala, and other beloved characters, according to Johnson.
On Wednesday, Johnson shared a behind-the-scenes video on Instagram that showed him with his family on location in Oahu, Hawaii, where they filmed the video announcing the live-action movie.
The video features Johnson, his wife Lauren Hashian, and their daughters Tiana and Jasmine singing lines from “You’re Welcome,” one of the iconic songs from the original movie.

In the video, Johnson talks about the privilege of having his family with him in the place where he did a lot of his growing up. He also mentions the power of the ocean and the spirit of their ancestors that his family felt while on location for the shoot.
Moana Animated Film a Box Office Success
The Moana animated film, which starred Auli’i Cravalho as the title character, grossed $643 million worldwide following its 2016 release. The movie was directed by John Musker and Ron Clements, with a screenplay from Jared Bush, and featured original songs written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Mark Mancina, and Opetaia Foa’i.
The movie was nominated for two Academy Awards, including Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song. It also featured a voice cast that included Rachel House, Temuera Morrison, Jemaine Clement, Nicole Scherzinger, and Alan Tudyk.
