Sony is reportedly planning a second PlayStation Showcase for 2023, as shared by an industry insider. This news comes in response to the mixed reactions surrounding the previous showcase, which left fans with unanswered questions.
Unlike the more frequent State of Play streams, PlayStation Showcases are special events reserved for major announcements and content reveals. The anticipation for the May 24 event was particularly high since the previous showcase occurred nearly two years ago.
However, some fans criticized the event for various reasons, including the revelation that certain PlayStation Showcase games would also be released on Xbox.
Another PlayStation Showcase?
According to the well-known leaker Colin Moriarty, Sony has another major showcase planned for later in the year. During an episode of the Iron Lords Podcast on May 28, Moriarty mentioned that industry sources had confirmed this information.
He speculated that the next showcase would focus on providing more details about the recently unveiled PlayStation games rather than announcing new ones, aligning with other reports that indicated Sony had held back certain announcements during the previous showcase.
Might Likely Happen
While Moriarty has had successful leaks in the past, his track record is not flawless. However, his claim of a second PlayStation Showcase carries some credibility. Considering Sony’s scheduling, it is likely that the ideal time for the event would be in late summer or early fall, as the company traditionally avoids major Q4 showings to focus on marketing existing games for the holiday season.
Most of the games featured in the last showcase did not have availability information, indicating that they are unlikely to be released this year. As a result, it is improbable that Sony will have many imminent releases to showcase in Q4 2023.
Thus, the third quarter of the year becomes the most probable window for the second PlayStation Showcase, where projects like the Silent Hill 2 remake, Naughty Dog’s next game, and other titles teased during the May 24 event could take center stage.
There’s also another rumor speculating that the recent PlayStation showcase was held back by announcements—in other words, they might be hiding something from the crowd.
