Astoundingly, it’s been almost three years since Sony launched the PlayStation 5.
As some people finally get their hands on the elusive console after stocking issues, there’s already buzz about a potential mid-generation refresh—rumored to be the PS5 Pro.
While we can’t predict the exact capabilities of this potential new console, as an avid PS5 user, I have some ideas about what improvements I’d like to see.
Balancing Graphics and Performance
The PS5 is undeniably an impressive piece of hardware, and the best games look stunning.
However, players often face a dilemma: choosing between top-notch graphics and a stable frame rate. Frame drops can be immersion-breakers, so I usually opt for performance mode.
This issue arises in various titles, including Spider-Man: Miles Morales.
In 2023, gamers shouldn’t have to choose between stable 60fps and superb graphics. High-end PC gamers, no doubt, scoff at PS5 owners facing this compromise.
In a PS5 Pro, ray tracing and high-resolution output should coexist with excellent performance.
A Slimmer, Cooler Design
The PS5 is undeniably bulky. A slimmer version—akin to the PS2 Slim—would make relocating the console easier and consume less space.
The PS5’s size is noticeably larger than the Xbox Series X, and it generates significant heat. An improved cooling system would be a welcome addition.
Enhancing the Gaming Experience
Rumors suggest Sony is developing a handheld streaming device for the PS5.
While this might seem superfluous, including it with the revamped Pro console would be a significant advantage.
Paired with a DualSense Edge controller, the PS5 Pro could cater to those seeking the pinnacle of console gaming.
If you’re an iOS user, here’s how to connect DualSense to your iPhone if you’re having trouble on your end.
More Storage Space
Finally, a larger SSD would be a huge benefit for the new console. While the PS5 boasts 825GB of storage, only 667GB is actually usable.
Considering the size of modern games—like the recent 148GB release of Star Wars: Jedi Survivor—no one wants to juggle installations to switch between their favorite titles.
