Apparently April 1st 2010 will bring a new firmware update to the PlayStation 3 and from the information over on the official EU PlayStation Blog its not looking good for users of other operating systems on the Sony hardware.
The new firmware will be released as version 3.21 and will revoke the ability to use other operating systems such as Linux due to security concerns and those wishing to continue using another operating system are advised not to upgrade on Thursday 1st of April.
Features of firmware version 3.21
- Ability to sign in to PlayStation Network and use network features that require signing in to PlayStation Network, such as online features of PS3 games and chat.
- Playback of PS3 software titles or Blu-ray Disc videos that require PS3 system software version 3.21 or later.
- Playback of copyright-protected videos that are stored on a media server (when DTCP-IP is enabled under Settings).
- Use of new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later.
According to the EU blog its not an elaborate April fool although we hope it is.
