In the midst of ongoing protests on Reddit, one of the platform’s largest gaming subreddits, r/minecraft, has declared its departure from the platform.
The subreddit, which has 7.4 million members and is supported by Mojang, the developers of Minecraft, has been a valuable resource for discussions, tech support, and changelogs.
However, recent changes introduced by Reddit management have led to alterations in rules and moderation across many subreddits, prompting the Minecraft community’s decision.
The Fallout from Reddit’s Changes
The changes implemented by Reddit’s management have sparked widespread protests across the platform. As a result, the official Minecraft subreddit, which was not only a hub for discussions but also a source of tech support and changelogs, has decided to withdraw its support from the platform.
The subreddit will continue to exist, but it will no longer be an official community where fans can receive help and information directly from the developers.
Mojang’s Mikael Hedberg announced the decision in a post, stating, “Because of these changes, we no longer feel that Reddit is an appropriate place to post official content or refer our players to.”
He thanked the community for their participation in past discussions and changelog threads and encouraged users to reach out to the team directly on their website or through their official social media channels for feedback about the game.
The Shift Back to In-House Support
This move marks a reversal of the trend of companies moving their internal support and forums to platforms like Reddit and Discord. The decision to bring these resources back in-house is a clear indication of the growing dissatisfaction with platforms like Reddit, TikTok, YouTube, and Twitch.
These platforms, despite their extensive reach and usefulness to people, games, and companies over the years, are now facing a backlash as they grapple with the consequences of their own greed. This situation underscores the importance of having reliable, self-owned websites and forums.
Hopefully, Sony’s not gonna do the same mistake and maybe introduce Minecraft to Playstation 5 soon enough.
