The Star Wars franchise fans were delighted to hear the news that Lars Mikkelsen is set to reprise his role as Grand Admiral Thrawn in the upcoming Disney+ series Ahsoka. The announcement was made during the Star Wars Celebration fan convention in London on Saturday, where Mikkelsen also joined the cast of Ahsoka onstage at the end of the panel.
Grand Admiral Thrawn
Author Timothy Zahn created the character of Thrawn as part of a series of Star Wars novels released in the 1990s that covered the events following 1983’s Return of the Jedi.
In those books, Thrawn was a cunning and ruthless Grand Admiral in the Empire who takes control of what’s left of the Imperial fleet and mounts a counter-offensive to take down the New Republic.
Despite the character being removed from the Star Wars canon when Disney purchased Lucasfilm in 2012, Thrawn’s popularity among fans endured.
Dave Filoni, a protege of George Lucas, resurrected the character in 2016 for the animated series Star Wars: Rebels, with Mikkelsen voicing Thrawn.
In the Rebels series, Thrawn’s backstory was maintained and further developed, and the character quickly became a favorite among Star Wars fans.
The possibility of the character appearing in live-action was first suggested in Season 2 of The Mandalorian in an episode that introduced Rosario Dawson as the Jedi warrior Ahsoka Tano.
In the episode, Ahsoka demands another character to reveal the location of Thrawn, leaving fans excited about the possibility of his return.
David Tennant to Voice Droid Huyang
In addition to Mikkelsen’s return, David Tennant has also been announced to return to the Star Wars universe. Tennant will be voicing the droid Huyang in “Ahsoka,” reprising his role from the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
Huyang is a droid who appears in The Clone Wars as a teacher at the Jedi Temple, instructing young Padawans in constructing their own lightsabers.
Tennant’s portrayal of the character was highly praised by fans, making his return to the Star Wars universe eagerly anticipated.
Fans of the franchise are thrilled to see the return of beloved characters in the upcoming series, which will focus on Ahsoka Tano as she searches for Grand Admiral Thrawn.
The series is being produced by Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau, who also produce The Mandalorian. A release date for Ahsoka has not yet been announced.
