Following the success of John Wick: Chapter 4, director Chad Stahelski has opened up about the possibility of a fifth installment in the action franchise. In a recent interview with ScreenRant, Stahelski expressed uncertainty about the future of the series and how it can move forward without Keanu Reeves’ titular character.
What Stahelsky has to say
“I don’t know what John Wick 5 is right now. I may have thoughts, ideas, and fragments of stuff, but I think I need a little time to breathe and see how this one does,” he said. “My biggest goal is that [hopefully] you love them all, but that hopefully you see the evolution.”
Stahelski emphasized the importance of reflecting and growing creatively before diving into the next project. He acknowledged the need for “detached introspection” and the importance of working in other fields to learn and bring new ideas back to the franchise.
John Wick impresses on the big screen
Despite the uncertainty surrounding the future of “John Wick,” the latest installment has had an impressive debut at the box office. John Wick: Chapter 4 earned $73.5 million in its opening weekend, setting a franchise record. The movie also received positive reviews and an “A” CinemaScore, appealing mostly to males and those over 25 years old.
In addition to its domestic success, the movie earned $64 million in international markets, debuting at No. 1 in all 71 markets where it was released. The film’s global earnings stand at $137.5 million, despite its production cost of over $100 million, which is the highest in the franchise.
The success of John Wick: Chapter 4 has prompted Lionsgate, the studio behind the franchise, to consider a fifth installment and another spinoff. Lionsgate’s motion picture group president, Joe Drake, praised the franchise as an “anomaly” and emphasized the rarity of a franchise where each successive movie improves on the previous one’s box office results.
Box office analyst Paul Dergarabedian noted the success of the movie’s opening weekend and its place in a remarkable March for movies. However, other superhero movies like Shazam! Fury of the Gods has struggled at the box office, with sales dropping by 69% in its second weekend. Meanwhile, other movies like Scream VI, Creed III, and 65 have continued to perform well in their respective series.
As the “John Wick” franchise looks to the future, fans wonder how the series can continue without Reeves’ iconic character. However, with Stahelski’s commitment to taking time for reflection and growth, the franchise may continue to surprise and delight audiences with each new installment.
