- The LAST FIFA?
After testing the waters with limited crossplay in FIFA 22, fans were hoping for full cross platform abilities in FIFA 23. But EA’s reputation of disappointing fans year after year is nothing new.
Rumor mills were in full flow, but no one was really buying it. And even though FIFA 22 gave a glimpse of the future, “we’ll believe it when we see it” was the consensus.
But.
EA managed to pull through this time around.
Overlooking the “scripting,” the new and slower “Defending AI,” and the ever-present “near-post glitch,” fans are happy to finally be able to play a game of FIFA with cross console friends.
But is FIFA 23 cross platform any good? What are its limitations, and above all, how can you set it up?
But first, something WILD!
When is FIFA 23 Coming Out?
Yes, that’s the BIG question we’re starting with because people are still searching for a FIFA 23 release date.
If you have finally come out of your cave, know that FIFA 23 Has Been Out For a Month! Here’s a look at the FIFA 23 cover, and some release date details.
We got our first taste of FIFA 23 with the EA Play Early Access Trail, Pro Ultimate Edition Access for PC, and the FIFA 23 Ultimate Edition on September 27, 2022.
And 3 days after that, EA released FIFA 23 Standard Edition on September 30, 2022.
So, it’s time you buy FIFA 23 for your PlayStation, Xbox, and PC (Epic & Steam).
There’s also a Legacy Edition for Nintendo Switch, but EA messed it up.
Is FIFA 23 Cross Platform?
Yes, FIFA 23 IS cross platform.
In fact, it’s the first FIFA game to have expanded cross platform support.
Xbox, PlayStation, PC, and Google Stadia users can finally play a FIFA match together.
However, there are some restrictions on FIFA 23 cross platform support. And one of those restrictions is extremely disappointing.
Out of the various game modes in FIFA 23, only a handful have cross platform support. And even the chosen game modes have partial cross platform support.
Oh and, FIFA 23 on Nintendo Switch is Not Crossplay Compatible.
Which FIFA 23 Game Modes Allow Crossplay?
Here’s a list of every game mode that supports crossplay in FIFA 23 and the restrictions.
- Online Friendlies
- Online Seasons
- FUT Champions
- FUT Ultimate Online Draft
- FUT Play a Friend
- FUT Division Rivals
- FUT Online Friendlies
And now come the classic EA restrictions.
Online Seasons, FUT Division Rivals, and FUT Online Friendlies Co-Op mode does not support crossplay. We also have some bad news for Pro Clubs fans. There’s still no FIFA 23 cross platform support for Pro Clubs.
Sadly the restrictions don’t stop here.
Is FIFA 23 Cross Generation?
FIFA 23 is available on the new-gen (PS5, Xbox Series S/X) as well as old-gen consoles (PS4, Xbox One). So one would think that FIFA 23 will allow cross generation matches as well.
Nope. That’s not how EA rolls. FIFA 23 is not cross generation.
Here’s how FIFA 23 cross generation works.
- New-Gen – PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X, PC, and Google Stadia.
- Old-Gen – PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
When it comes to FIFA 23, only consoles of the same generation allow crossplay.
So, PS5, Xbox Series S/X, PC, and Google Stadia users can crossplay FIFA 23 with each other.
Similarly, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One users can only crossplay FIFA 23 among themselves.
PS5 and PS4 users can’t match up. Xbox Series S/X and Xbox One players can’t team up either. And because PCs are categorized as new-gen, they can only crossplay FIFA 23 with PS5 and Xbox Series S/X users.
As for Google Stadia, that’s being shut down anyway.
Enable/Disable FIFA 23 Crossplay
For one reason or another, not everyone is a fan of video game crossplay. Although it hardly applies to a game like FIFA 23, players believe that different platforms and new-gen consoles put others at a slight advantage.
Cross platform matchmaking is on by default in FIFA 23. So, if you’re not interested in cross platform matchmaking while enjoying an Online Friendly, here’s how to disable FIFA 23 crossplay:
- On the main FIFA 23 menu, press R2/RT to open the Social Tab.
- Press Start/Options to open Social Settings.
- Find and open Matchmaking Options.
- Toggle Cross-play Enabled to No (or Yes if you want crossplay).
And that’s how easy it is to opt out of FIFA 23 crossplay.
Is FIFA 23 The Last FIFA?
The 30-year-long partnership between EA Sports and FIFA is coming to an end. After months of negotiations, the two giants failed to find a suitable agreement and decided to end this joint venture which will officially expire after the 2022 FIFA Worldcup in Qatar.
Why Did EA and FIFA End Their Partnership?
It’s rumored that FIFA was looking to double the licensing fees, which would have cost EA $150 million every year. Moreover, FIFA wanted to partner up with other video game developers to create separate FIFA titles.
And of course, EA didn’t agree.
So, technically, FIFA 23 will be the last FIFA, but it won’t be EA’s last football video game.
What’s Next For FIFA?
After the split, both EA and FIFA are free to create their own football simulators. While FIFA is still looking, EA has already announced a rebranded FIFA.
In July 2023, EA will release EA Sports FC, EA’s very own football game will be very similar to the FIFA we all know and love. 300+ licenses, similar game modes, all the leagues- everything will be there.
3 (La Liga, Premier League, Bundesliga) of the 5 Top European Football Leagues have already signed up for EA Sports FC. And with UEFA on board as well, competitions like the Champions League, Europa League, and more will definitely be in EA Sports FC.
But, because of the breakup, EA Sports FC will not feature any FIFA competitions anymore. And that includes the FIFA World Cup.
Still, EA Sports FC have so much to offer and by the time it will come out, EA will get more leagues on board. So, unless FIFA dishes out a solid game, EA Sports FC will be reeling in all the FIFA fans.
