If you love traveling along with all of your luggage around, a row of chests in minecarts can do the job! But what if you want to explore the new land with all of your stuff? Llama is the answer! Being the passive mobs that were added in the 1.11 update, Llama has some functions like horses, and you can even equip them with a chest. So how to tame a Llama in Minecraft? Let’s find out!
What You Need to Tame a Llama in Minecraft
You do not need any specific item to tame a Llama. However, having a sustainable amount of wheat and hay bale can speed up the taming process of the Llama.
- Wheat
- Hay Bale
How to Tame a Llama in Minecraft
Step 1: Collect Wheat or Hay Bale (Optional)
If you don’t want to waste time doing the farmer stuff, just go to step 2 where you can find a Llama and tame it right away. But not to say, it’s really worth the time to farm wheat or hay bale if you decided to tame a large number of llamas later.
Wheat is a primary item from farming which you can get by tilting the dirt or grass block, watering it, and planting a wheat seed onto the titled soil. After some time (or use bone meal if you like), the wheat will be fully grown and you can harvest it for 1x Wheat.
Wheat can also be found in looted chests in most Minecraft structures such as Dungeons, Igloos, Pillager Outposts, Shipwrecks, Ruins, Villages, and Woodland Mansions. They have a high chance of containing 1-21x Wheat.
You can use Hay Bale to craft 9x Wheat if you want. And this is recommended if you want to tame a Llama efficiently.
To craft a Hay Bale, you will need a Crafting Table and 9x Wheat. When you have them, right-click the table and put all 9 Wheat in to craft 1x Hay Bale. Sometimes, you can also find Hay Bale spawning naturally in the world near the villager’s farms. Remember to use a hoe to break Hay Bale for maximum effect!
Step 2: Find Llama in Minecraft
Normal Llamas can be spawned naturally above grass blocks with a light level equal to 7 or higher. Specifically, Llama can only spawn in Savanna Plateau, Savanna, and Windswept Hills biome.
At first glance, you may be thinking Llamas are kinda rare, but not really. Although only 3 biomes, those biomes are often very big. And Llama spawn in a herd of 4-6, so no worries if you want to find some!
There is another way to find Llama and it may involve waiting and luck. The wandering traders! They always spawn with 2 llamas and the way they work is that every day in the game, the wandering trader will have a small chance to be spawned around 48 blocks of the player.
Step 3: Tame a Llama
If you have already found a Llama without any wheat or hay bale, just simply right-click on it with your empty hand. You will be riding the Llama but it does not stop there! After a few seconds, you will be likely kicked out by the Llamas. That’s normal!
Here is the game mechanic for Minecraft nerds, every Llama in Minecraft has an attribute called “Temper” and it starts at 0. Whenever the llama is ridden by the player, a random number between 0 and 99 is picked. If this number is lower than the Temper value, a Llama is successfully tamed and you will see some hearts floating around.
With that being said, the first taming attempt has a 1% chance to be successful without food items. So feeding Llamas with Wheat can increase its temper attribute by 3, and Hay Bale is 6. And every failed attempt will increase the Temper attribute by 5. That’s why the more you’re trying to tame, the easier it gets!
