Water elevators are a great way to move up and down vertically in Minecraft without having to use stairs or ladders.
They’re also very efficient since they don’t take up much room or require many blocks to successfully build.
That makes them perfect for use in any type of base you might be living in, especially if you reside underground due to exploring in the Caves & Cliffs update.
What You Need to Make an Elevator in Minecraft
- x64 Glass – Depends on the height of the elevator. Get a stack for now.
- x2 Water Bucket
- x2 Door
- x64 Kelp – Depends on the height of the elevator. Get a stack for now.
- x1 Soul Sand (for going up)
- x1 Magma Block (for going down)
How to Make an Elevator in Minecraft
Step 1. Get your supplies
Glass can be made by smelting sand, which can be found in desert biomes and on beaches.
Water buckets can be made from 3 pieces of iron, which can be found in caves.
Hint: Don’t forget to fill your buckets with water!
Doors can be crafted from wooden planks.
Kelp can be found deep in the ocean biomes.
Soul sound and Magma blocks are found in Nether.
Step 2. Create your elevator shafts
Now you have everything you need, you will want to create two glass hallow enclosures; they can be as high as you need them to be, depending on how much distance you need to travel.
I’ve put mine next to each other, but you can place them as far apart as you need – depending on your base setup.
Step 3. Place your elevator doors
Go inside your elevator at the very bottom, then whilst facing your exit, place your door. Do the same in both columns.
Step 4. Fill your column with water.
You want to go to the very top of both of your columns, either by building upwards with blocks or by using scaffolding. Then you want to place the water inside one of the columns so it runs to the very bottom.
Step 5. Add kelp
Now that water is running through both of the columns, you’ll want to place kelp all the way up it.
This will turn the water block into a source block, which will be useful later.
Once the collum is filled with kelp, break it all as there is no use for it.
Step 6. Convert the columns into up or down elevators.
Finally, to turn your columns into actual elevators, you need to either;
- Replace the bottom of a collum with soulsand and, which will turn it into an upwards elevator.
- Replace the bottom of a collum with a magma block, which will turn it into a downwards elevator.
