Strongholds in Diablo 4 have always been seen as a feature brimming with potential. Recently, a player proposed a brilliant idea to integrate them more effectively into the game’s existing gameplay loop.
While Helltides and Nightmare Dungeons currently form the core of Diablo 4’s endgame, and the reward structure has been well-received, players have expressed a desire for more variety.
Nightmare Dungeons may provide entertainment for a while, but they lack the unpredictable chaos of Diablo 3’s Greater Rifts.
A Plea for More Content
The consensus among fans is that Diablo 4’s endgame is promising in theory, but it could benefit from a broader range of content. Frequent requests from the community include faster World Boss respawns, improved Nightmare Dungeon layouts, and repeatable Strongholds.
While it’s unclear when or if Blizzard will expand Diablo 4’s endgame content, the developers’ willingness to enhance rewards in Nightmare Dungeons and Helltides suggests they are receptive to community feedback.
TheCruelHand, a user on the Diablo 4 subreddit, proposed a simple yet effective idea: make Strongholds subject to a weekly reset. This would make them repeatable and introduce varying modifiers, similar to the different affixes in Nightmare Dungeons.
Bosses could also be randomized. Given that clearing a Stronghold doesn’t take much time, restoring each Stronghold’s waypoint wouldn’t pose a significant burden on players.
Nightmare Strongholds: A Potential Addition
Another innovative suggestion came from Kyriolex, who proposed the option to tackle Nightmare Strongholds by activating Nightmare Mode through Stronghold Sigils. While some fans expressed concern that this novelty might quickly wear off, others welcomed the idea of breaking up the endgame monotony. The grind to acquire a perfect gear set for any Diablo 4 class is considerably longer than in Diablo 3, and repeatedly running the same content can become tedious.
However, making Strongholds a weekly grind could backfire, potentially introducing an unwelcome grind for players every Thursday. A more player-friendly solution might be to let players control the reset button. The upcoming Season of the Malignant in Diablo 4 will introduce Malignant Tunnels, which, while not the repeatable Strongholds players have been asking for, should add a new layer to Diablo 4’s endgame.
And in the upcoming season, Malignant Hearts are the main attraction throughout the whole period.
