Have you seen 1883 yet? Since you’re reading this article, you probably have, but just in case you haven’t it’s one of those historic mini-series that should be on your watch list. Especially because there haven’t been any interesting shows about the wild west lately.
As the anticipation for the upcoming season slowly grows, here’s what we know so far…
An overview of the cast and plot
The series takes place a year after the events of the “Gilded Age”, only the setting is the less civilized west. It is a prequel to the hit series “Yellowstone”, the fourth season of which ended at the beginning of January 2022.
The “Prequel” was announced by a segment in “Yellowstone 4” set in 1883 (here we have a flashback from 1862) and the series has already gained a lot of viewers, after the first season ended. Taylor Sheridan, however, did not mention much about season two and its potential release date, which has been driving the fans crazy.
From the beginning of his career as an author, Sheridan has had a (neo)western flair, so it was only a matter of time before he realized a real Western, which he has done now with a series focused on the ancestors of the “Yellowstone” rancher from Montana, John Dutton (Kevin Costner).
The “flash-forward” opening of the first episode in season 1 is impressive in the package with the narration of the protagonist Elise Dutton (Isabel May in a breakthrough role). Elisa says that one has to be there, in the Wild West, to understand the “fantasy of right and wrong”, that is, to go through “hell” with “demons everywhere”, i.e. “to become a demon” to survive and not be, he would later say, “eaten alive”.
The words are accompanied by images of the Indian attack on Elisa’s carriage, which will end in flames, and she shoots the attackers with an arrow in her torso. All this, then, happens in the later episodes, during Elise’s journey with her father James Dillon Dutton, and mother Margaret (musicians Tim McGraw and Faith Hill) from Texas to Montana, several generations before Costner’s character settled there.
Season 2 release date?
According to what we know by now, season 2 has not yet been confirmed. At least not the way we want it to be. Since the series is a prequel to Yellowstone, the story will continue, but in a separate show 1923, as what was seen at the beginning of 2023. So, the storyline of this entirely new show will live on what has been happening since 1883, followed by a Bass Reeve story.
But don’t get too disappointed yet, because Sheridan hasn’t said no to season 2. He hasn’t said yes either, but his not giving concrete answers of what may happen opens the door to many possibilities, including a possibility for continuation. After all, the whole idea was spread to three separate shows following the same topic, and characters, only at different times.
Come what may, both the Yellowstone prequel and sequel are definitely worth watching, because of their quality cast. Kevin Costner started the whole story, which continued via Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, to Harrison Ford and Hellen Mirren.
You’ve probably never seen a Western series where people are killed so easily and without hesitation. There are no warnings, no threats, you just pull out your gun and shoot your opponent in the forehead or chest. By the way, Sheridan wrote all ten episodes and did a great job, he only directed the first episode, and the others were distributed by Ben Richardson and Christina Alexandra Voros. The episodes feature Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson; he’s in a Civil War flashback, and she’s a store owner getting drunk with Margaret Dutton.
