GTA Online enthusiasts are beginning to wonder if support for the game on last-gen consoles is nearing its end. Since its 2013 launch, GTA Online has spanned numerous platforms over nearly a decade.
Initially released on Xbox 360 and PS3, the game’s support eventually shifted to Xbox One, PS4, and PC, followed by Xbox Series X|S and PS5 releases in 2022.
Rockstar promised exclusive content for the latest consoles, and although differences have been minimal thus far, the situation could soon change.
Growing PS5 Availability and Impact on Developers
Recent reports indicate that over 38 million PS5 units have been shipped, including a record 6.3 million units in Q1 2023.
The console, once difficult to obtain due to supply constraints and scalpers, is now more widely available. As a result, developers can focus less on catering to the last-gen player base.
Rockstar Games fan and insider Tez2 noted that the company announced a “service update” for GTA Online, potentially signaling an end to last-gen support.
The Future of GTA Online on Last-Gen Consoles
Considering GTA Online’s numerous updates over the years, its performance issues on last-gen consoles, and the increasing adoption of current-gen systems, it might make sense for Rockstar to phase out support for Xbox One and PS4 versions.
This wouldn’t necessarily entail shutting down servers, but updates for GTA Online on these platforms could cease. Whether and when this occurs remains uncertain, but Rockstar appears intent on maintaining momentum until the release of GTA 6—likely slated for 2024 or 2025.
