As if tunnels and subways filled with mutants, Nazi’s and communists wasn’t enough to keep you busy in Metro 2033, we now have to contend with ghosts. The deserted underground network was once home to a thriving metropolis and now those that commuted on a daily basis and the metro trains that they traveled on are just ghostly aspiritions that haunt the dark tunnels beneath Moscow.

Metro 2033 just got a whole lot better, March 19th should now be etched in your mind

THQ and Vigil Games have today announced that they are to release a demo for their apocalyptic title Darksiders, due to release on both Xbox Live Marketplace and PlayStation Network on Thursday 25th February.

The demo will include the first dungeon encounter in its entirety, named the Twilight Cathedral, from the acclaimed action-adventure game. This will provide players will plenty of challenges to overcome including puzzles, new equipment to discover and boss battles against both the monstrous demon Jailer and the savage bat-winged Tiamat. It will apparently take the average player around 90 minutes to complete, so there’s plenty of opportunity to get an overall impression of what the full title has to offer.

David Adams, General Manager of Vigil Games, states “We are really pumped to be bringing a playable demo for Darksiders to Xbox 360 and PlayStation3. We really wanted to give gamers a true idea of the variety of gameplay that the game offers and so rather than just making a standard 20-minute demo version of the first few levels, we decided to give away this massive level and reveal the true essence of the game.”

The full game was released back in January and is available at retail for both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Darksiders

January 28, 2010 by Ryan Lineker
Filed under PlayStation 3, Reviews, Xbox 360

Darksiders is a new RPG action and adventure game that has been developed by Vigil Games and published by THQ.

In this game you take on the role of War, one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, with his primary role being to maintain the balance between the forces of Heaven and the forces of Hell. War himself has no choice in siding with either kingdom, as he is controlled by The Charred Council and has been assigned The Watcher to oversee and control his actions so the Council’s orders are followed.

He finds himself being transported to Earth in the middle of the apocalypse, and having being told by the Council that it is entirely his fault he then gains the responsibility of salvaging the earth from these forces to ensure the survival of mankind. Due to this, the Council takes away most of his powers and this is something that The Watcher doesn’t let War forget.

The game is a mix of combat and strategy with the player needing to complete both puzzles and defeat bosses to progress across the various locations of the title, as you seek to follow the Council’s orders. During combat when you kill enemies you will release, and be able to absorb, different types of souls including; green for health, yellow to build your Wrath meter, and blue which is are Souls of the Dead – used as currency for purchasing upgrades, new weapons, moves and potions from Vulgrim.

Throughout War’s journey across war-torn Earth, you will find yourself battling against demons, insects, angels and everything the creative minds of both Joe Madureira, the titles artist, and Vigil’s developers have managed to come up with. The range of detail that is used in the creation of your foes is awe-inspiring, and it’s certainly a shame that after a few swings of your sword and a spectacular finishing move, the creation is dead.

49868_Online_Preview_Screens_Dec_09_0072_mayhem_square

On your travels, you’ll notice on your mini-map there are treasures for you to collect. These include chests which contain the three forms of souls previously mentioned, Artefacts that you can sell to Vulgrim for more currency to help you purchase and upgrade your character faster, and finally special items such as parts of Abysmal Armour – which once fully collected helps to enhance War’s character with extra health etc.

One of the flaws that immediately strikes you as you start playing the game is the lack of originality. The ways in which you attack, gain health and souls from kills, open chests, finishing moves when enemies are low in health and more seem to have been influenced from the infamous God of War series. As well as this, there are also slight reflections of ideas and items from The Legend of Zelda series, Devil May Cry and flight sections that can be directly compared to those in Panzer Dragoon.

Even though this makes the title feel like a blend of previously successful titles, that’s not saying it doesn’t perform such obvious homages well and within its own style. The combat is not your average hack ‘n slash violence, although there is some of that, as you are able to pick up and throw real world items such as cars. You’ll also come across bombs that need to be set alight by using Crossblade, linking its path through a torch and then across to bomb – the influences of Zelda being clearly present. The more that you use certain weapons, means that you will gain experience wielding them – allowing you to level them up to make attacks that they do stronger. This therefore makes it easier to kill the little minions and help you focus more on the larger enemies.

The storyline that you follow as War is an excellent one that has you stuck to your seat, wanting to play more just to find out what happens next. Even once you have completed the story, there are still more places to visit and a continual search to find all of the collectible items to gain all the trophies/ achievements. Another good thing about this game is the length of the story – this isn’t a Call of Duty 7 hour job and then you’re finished, it is significantly greater even if you are the best gamer around. So on average you can expect it to take roughly 20-25 hours, and if you’re like me slightly longer if you get stuck at one of the puzzles in the first levels!

49872_Online_Preview_Screens_Dec_09_0056_mayhem_straga_4

Even though there are a wide range of bosses, they do eventually tend to become slightly repetitive and dull, as it is the same process over and over again to kill them. So each time you encounter one, you’ll have to make sure you stay away when they use their main attack before going up and striking them at the right time in their weak spot to cause the most damage possible. Saying this if you can look past the repetition, the work that is put into the design of these demonic monsters is great.

The puzzles in the game aren’t the easiest to solve so sometimes you may need to step aside and scratch your head to figure out how to progress. However don’t worry, it isn’t bad enough to make you have a bald patch on the top of your head from pulling your hair out… unless you are a bit slow like me!

The graphics and presentation of Darksiders are amazing and it is one of the most brilliant parts of the game. There is no significant lag that makes the framerate slow during game play, and no noticeable glitches that I came across during my playthrough.

There is no multiplayer side to Darksiders, which is a bit of a disappointment as it lowers the time you can have on the game once you have played through the story and found every item there is to be found. Other than this, the game is probably one that most people didn’t have on their list of games to purchase during the first quarter of 2010 but is one that I certainly think should at least be considered to at least rent, if not bought.

Despite the lack of originality, I really did enjoy playing through Darksiders. I enjoyed every aspect, but for me the highlight was exploring the different locations that have been made with such vivid detail, as well as fighting such a broad number of unique monsters and demons. For me, this is a title that certainly shouldn’t be overlooked.

Lost Gamer Verdict: 9/10
